Montana State Women Tame Vandals in Season-Opener

Montana State senior Rebecca Mercer scored a game-high 21 points, including a 5-of-7 effort from three-point range to guide the Bobcat women’s basketball team to a 77-49 victory over Idaho in the season-opener for both squads.
Also in double-figures for Montana State (1-0) were Krislyn Wallace 12, and Sarah Strand 10. Strand, a true-freshman from Seattle, also guided the Bobcats under the boards with a team-high seven rebounds.
“It was a good, solid team effort,” said MSU third-year head coach Tricia Binford. “We didn’t get off to a good start and Idaho did a nice job being the aggressor. We challenged the kids at halftime, and they responded very positively.”
With the scored tied at 27-27 with 5:46 remaining in the opening period, MSU went on an 11-2 run to hold a 38-29 advantage at intermission.
The Bobcats opened the second stanza with a 14-5 run to stake a 53-34 margin following a Lyndi Seidensticker jumper with 13:36 left. Montana State built its largest lead at 75-47 on a Brandie Buckless layup with 1:38 remaining.
“Our offense has been clicking pretty well, but we still need to be ready to go defensively, from the opening tip,” Binford said. “We have to be the ones that dictate the flow of the game.”
MSU shot 49 percent from the field, including a 44 percent outing from three-point range by virtue of connecting on 8-of-18 treys. The Bobcats hit at a 57 percent clip from long distance in the second half.
Montana State finished the game with only 16 turnovers, while forcing Idaho (0-1) into 26 miscues. The Bobcat defense also held the Vandals to 34 percent from the field.
Sophomore point-guard Erica Perry matched her career-high for rebounds (5) and assists (5), while leading all players with six steals.
“Erica really did a nice job running the offense and getting us going on defense,” Binford said. “I’m pleased with the way we finished; and now we have to do it on a consistent basis.”
Idaho was led by Katie Madison with 13 points and eight rebounds.
MSU will host sister school MSU Billings on Sunday at 3 p.m., in Worthington Arena.
