Barnhart, Verlanic Earn Academic Honor

A pair of Bobcats from Montana high schools earned Academic All-America Region VII honors on Thursday, advancing the pair to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America national ballot. Bobcat center Jim Verlanic and tight end Elliott Barnhart, whose career appears ended by a knee injury suffered two weeks ago, each earned Academic All-Region honors for the first time.
Barnhart, a senior from Broadus, caught 19 passes for 239 yards in Montana State's first eight games this season. He caught three touchdown passes, as well, including the scoring play on MSU's first drive of the season at Texas A&M. The microbiology major who carries a 3.64 grade point average (out of 4.0) has been an active researcher in coalbed methane emissions as an MSU undergrad. He has been published with one of his professors, and has presented a paper on the subject at an academic conference.
Verlanic, a junior from Anaconda, has started all nine games for the Bobcats this season. He helped anchor an offensive line that allowed only 18 sacks out of 183 passing plays. A second generation Bobcat (his father Ken played at MSU in the late '70s), Verlanic maintains a 3.71 GPA in Cell Biology and Neuroscience, with plans for medical school.
