Montana State Women Suffer Slow Start at Iowa State

Iowa State (4-1) built a 27-9 advantage with 7:44 remaining in the opening period, before Montana State (2-3) countered with an 11-2 run to close to within 29-20 following a three-pointer by Anne Phippard. The Cyclones entered intermission with a 37-20 lead.
“We let Iowa State get up on us early, and in this atmosphere, that makes the mountain that much harder to climb,” said MSU third-year coach Tricia Binford. “I thought we did a nice job handling the ball. We committed only six turnovers in the first half, but we shot 27 percent from the field and were down 13 boards, and that was the difference.”
The Bobcats improved their shooting to 42 percent in the second stanza, but couldn’t overcome a sizeable 22-2 ISU advantage from the free throw line.
Montana State was paced by a pair of freshmen, as Sarah Strand led the Bobcats with 14 points, while Lyndi Seidensticker came off the bench to notch nine points.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 34 percent from the field and went four-of-22 from beyond the arc. Highlighting MSU’s play was just 13 miscues, while forcing ISU into 19 turnovers.
“We didn’t shoot the ball very well,” Binford said. “I was happy with the play of Sarah, Lyndi and Jamie Thornton.”
Thornton, a sophomore from Pullman, Wash., notched a team-high six rebounds.
ISU had four players in double-figures, paced by Nicky Wieben with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Montana State will play at Drake on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. (MST).
