Montana State (2-2) got out to an early 15-5 lead in the first period on a Sarah Strand 3-pointer, before Denver (1-2) rattled off a 16-2 run. The Pioneers held a 42-33 advantage at intermission.
Denver built its largest lead at 55-38 with 13:33 remaining, before the Bobcats when on a furious rally to pull to within five-points on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes. However, a pair of three-pointers and bucket by Ashly Robinson put the game out of reach.
“We ran into a hot-shooting team, and you have to give them credit,” said third-year MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We gave up too many runs, and didn’t do a very good job answering them.”
For the game, Montana State shot 42 percent from the field, including 48 percent in the opening stanza. The Bobcats also converted 21-of-26 from the free throw line.
DU ended the game shooting 49 percent from the field, including 63 percent from beyond the arc.
Both squads posted 33 rebounds and 19 turnovers.
MSU had three players in double-digits, led by Krislyn Wallace and Rebecca Mercer with a game-high 19 points, apiece. Strand chipped in 14 points.
Under the glass, the Bobcats were paced by Wallace with ten rebounds. Point-guard Erica Perry had another solid effort with seven points, four steals and three assists.
Montana State will play at Iowa State on Nov. 30.
