Bobcat Women Head to Mile High City

The Montana State women’s basketball team is in the middle of a four game road swing that started last Saturday at the University of Texas at Arlington. This Saturday, the Bobcats will travel to the University of Denver. The contest with the Pioneers is the first of a home-and-home series with DU. The two teams will play in Bozeman on Dec. 15. Following its game in the Mile High city, Montana State will tavel to Iowa, to face Iowa State (Nov. 30) and Drake (Dec. 2). MSU, who was off to its best start since the 2003-04 season, dropped its first game of the year at UTA. The Mavericks handed the Bobcats a 70-43 setback. MSU committed 27 turnovers and shot only 26 percent from the field. Senior Rebecca Mercer paced Montana State with 15 points, connecting of 5-of-11 from the floor. The Pioneers are 0-2 on the season, dropping games to Duke (57-37) and Air Force (65-56). DU is led this season by Nnenna Akotaobi, who is averaging 16.5 ppg.
‘Cat Tracks:
Krislyn Wallace just missed her first double-double of the season with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds at Texas-Arlington...The Bobcats were out-scored 38-22 in the second half at UTA. Heading into the contest, Montana State had averaged a +18 point advantage in the second period...Freshman Sarah Strand entered Saturday’s game averaging 13.5 points per game, while shooting 60 percent from the field. UTA shut-down the Bobcat forward, limiting her to two points on one-of-nine from the field...Montana State committed 27 turnovers against the Mavericks. The 27 miscues were the most for the Bobcats since matching the number against Portland State on Jan. 6, 2007…The Bobcats are without the services of two-year starter Nubia Garcia, who is sidelined for 6-8 weeks with a broken collarbone.

The Bobcats dropped a 70-43 decision at the University of Texas-Arlington last Saturday. MSU shot 26 percent from the field and committed 27 turnovers in the loss. The first seven minutes of the game, howvever, belonged to the Bobcats. Montana State built a 10-5 advantage following a Rebecca Mercer free throw, and held a 13-10 edge at the 12:03 mark. The Mavericks then went on a 13-0 run and entered intermission with a 32-21 advantage. MSU closed the gap to 32-25 to open the second stanza on back-to-back buckets by Mercer, but would get no closer. Mercer finished with 15 points, while senior Krislyn Wallace chipped in 10 points and nine rbeounds. MSU point-guard Erica Perry finished the game with eight points and four steals.
M*A*S*H 4077th:
Montana State has been hit with the injury bug in the early going this fall. Starting forward Nubia Garcia will be out of action for 6-8 weeks with a broken collarbone suffered in practice two weeks ago. Garcia averaged 9.9 points and 7.0 rebounds, last season. Rebecca Mercer and Jenny Heringer are also bouncing back from injury and not at a full 100 percent.
Turnin’ It Around:
Montana State had the 11th best turnaround in the nation at the NCAA Division I level, last year. MSU improved 8.5 games from its 3-23 mark during the 2005-06 campaign. The Bobcats finished 13-16 last season.
Smart Cookies:
As a team, MSU ranked 4th in the country, academically speaking. The Bobcats had a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.56 and ranked among the WBCA’s top five for the second straight season. MSU had a Big Sky Conference record 11 players on the league’s all-academic list last spring.
Toe The Line:
As a team, Montana State shot 72 percent from the free throw line during the 2006-07 season. Three Bobcats ranked among the Big Sky’s top ten in free throw percentage. Rebecca Mercer led the Big Sky shooting 92 percent, while Nubia Garcia was 9th (.776) and Alyssa Nelson 10th (.763). During the season, Mercer had a stretch of 23 consecutive makes. Currently, the Bobcats are shooting 70 percent from the charity line, with Callie Goff leading the way at 78 percent.
To Catch a Thief:
As a team, the Bobcats lead the Big Sky Conference in steals, averaging 12.33 thefts per game. Sophomore Erica Perry paces the team and the Big Sky Conference, averaging 3.00 steals per game.
Player of the Week
Rebecca Mercer has been named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts at the University of Texas at Arlington, last Saturday. Mercer, who was the 2007 Big Sky Newcomer of the Year, scored a team-high 15 points, connecting on five-of -11 from the field and four-of-six from the free throw line. In addition, Mercer added four rebounds and a steal in 31 minutes of action. She currently leads the Bobcats averaging 14.7 points per game, while shooting 39 percent from the line. Already this season, Mercer has converted 7-of-16 from three-point range, shooting 44 percent from beyond the arc. She posted a season-high 21 points at Idaho.
