Montana State Women’s Basketball Team Drops First Game

“We didn’t handle Texas-Arlington’s pressure and we didn’t take care of the ball,” said MSU third-year head coach Tricia Binford. “Their pressure really limited what we could do offensively. We didn’t attack the basket.”
Montana State (2-1) got out to an early 13-9 lead on a Rebecca Mercer three-pointer. Texas-Arlington (2-1) quickly notched 14 unanswered points and held a 32-21 advantage at intermission.
The Bobcats cut the margin to 32-25 on a Mercer layup at the start of the second period, but would get no closer.
Mercer led Montana State with 15 points, connecting on five-of-11 from the field. Also in double-figures was Krislyn Wallace with ten points.
Wallace also paced the Bobcats under the boards with a team-high nine rebounds.
For the game, MSU went just 13-of-50 from the floor, including an icy one-of-11 from three-point range.
“Give Texas-Arlington credit,” Binford said. “We need to become tougher and be more physical. There are certainly areas we need to improve, and we’ll bounce back.”
The Mavericks had four players in double-figures, led by Maryann Abanobi with 22 points and three assists.
MSU will travel to Denver on Nov. 24.
