One Last Look: Cat-Griz
11/17/2007 12:00:00 AM | Football
The day is here.
For an entire year, people in the Treasure State clamor and trash talk and pine for one day - Cat-Griz. That day has arrived, with third-ranked Montana visiting Bobcat Stadium at 12:37 pm for the 107th meeting between these in-state rivals. The 2007 Grizzlies hope to stake their claim as one of the great teams in Big Sky Conference history by posting a perfect regular season (joining 2001 Montana, 1996 Montana, 1991 Nevada, and 1986 Nevada as unbeaten and untied teams in the regular season during the playoff era).
Montana State, on the other hand, stands 6-4, a winning season secure. The day arrives in bittersweet fashion, however, with MSU's Big Sky title hopes dashed two weeks ago and three of the program's proud fifth-year seniors going through Senior Day ceremonies in street clothes, part of an injury plague that descended on the program in November.
WEATHER OR NOT
With the forecast calling for the mildest Cat-Griz game played in Bobcat Stadium since the game moved to the weekend before Thanksgiving, it's appropriate that rain is in this afternoon's forecast. If that forecast holds true, the Bobcats will have played five of their 11 2007 contests in rain or snow.
TICKET TALK
With today's game long since sold out, Montana State guarantees itself the best season attendance average (over 14,000) and the second-best cumulative attendance (around 87,000) in school history.
LAST YEAR
The powerful Grizzlies staged a late red-zone stand to hold off Montana State 13-7 in a brutally physical contest in Missoula. No one left Washington-Grizzly Stadium on that afternoon questioning the will or courage of anyone who played in that game, which wasn't decided until Cory Carpenter was sacked in Montana's end of the Stadium in the game's waning moments.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Including the sports of volleyball and men's basketball, athletic squads representing Montana, Montana State, Boise State, Weber State and Idaho State compete in Bozeman this weekend, reuniting a big chunk of the Big Sky Conference as it stood from 1970-96.
• Both defenses stand to spend a lot of time in the opposing backfield today. The Grizzlies have 81 tackles-for-loss this year, the Bobcats 87.
• Rob Ash attempts to become Montana State's first first-year coach to beat Montana since Dave Arnold in 1983. Arnold's son E.J. is the Bobcats' tight ends and special teams coach.
