Bobcat Spikers Close Out Season at Home

The Montana State volleyball team will complete its 2007 season this weekend when they host Idaho State and Weber State in Shroyer Gym. Montana State is still looking for its first Big Sky win of the season. The closest the Bobcats have come was a 3-2 loss at Idaho State in October. Idaho State enters Friday’s match with a 5-22 overall mark and a 1-13 Big Sky slate. The Bengals dropped a pair of league matches last weekend, losing to Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona in Pocatello. ISU has been led this season by Charlee Kinghorn and Emily Waldron, who average 2.84 and 2.51 kills, respectively. Weber State will play at the University of Montana, before making the trip down I-90. Weber State is 13-12 overall and 9-5 in league play. The Wildcats have secured a Big Sky Conference tournament berth. WSU defeated MSU in October 3-0 in Ogden. This season, Weber State has been guided by Micah Lines and Chelsea Bair, who average 3.28 and 3.15 kills, respectively. As a team, the Wildcats hit .221 from the floor.

Freshman libero Meghan Albiston notched a match-high 16 digs against Sacramento State to give her 342 saves on the season. Albiston is only two digs away from becoming the first freshman in Bobcat history to rank among the single-season top ten in digs…Monique Schaal registered eight kills and a career-high eight digs against Sacramento State…Patti Anderson recorded her 14th double-digit dig match with 12 saves against Sacramento State…Laura Viren posted her 12th double-figure dig match with ten saves against the Hornets…Sophomore Nicole Grypiuk had four blocks on Friday. She leads the Bobcats averaging .81 blocks per game.
The Week That Was:
The Bobcats dropped a 30-17, 30-26, 30-12 decision to Big Sky leading Sacramento State on Friday night. The Hornets out-hit the Bobcats .271 to .097 in the first game. MSU rallied in the second stanza, hitting .140 from the field. With the score tied at 24-all, Sacramento State broke away with a 6-2 run. The third set belonged to the Hornets, who hit .485 from the floor. MSU was paced in the loss by senior Monique Schaal, who registered eight kills and eight digs. True-freshman Rachelle Allen backed up the performance with seven kills, six digs and two blocks. Senior patti Anderson came off the bench to post at .333 attack mark, four kills and 12 digs.
Seeing Double:
Senior Patti Anderson and junior Laura Viren have been doubling-up at a consistent clip this season. Anderson has posted 14 matches in double-digit digs, including 12 of the last 17 starts. On the year, the Deer Lodge native has tallied six double-doubles. Viren, an outside hitter from Prior Lake, Minn., leads the team with eight double-doubles. In addition, she has notched ten double-digit kill matches and 12 in double-figure digs. She has been in double-digit digs in 11 of the last 18 outings.
Gotta Dig It:
Montana State is averaging 15.49 digs per game. The Bobcats are led this season by freshman libero Meghan Albiston, who is averaging 3.84 saves per game. Last weekend, the Idaho Falls native posted a match-high 16 saves against Sacramento State. Also helping the ‘Cats have been Patti Anderson (3.10 dpg), Laura Viren (2.76 dpg) and Sarah Allen (2.02 dpg).

As a team, MSU is averaging 2.13 blocks per game. On the season, MSU is paced by Nicole Grypiuk, Kaytlin Van Burger and Demi Dlouhy at .81, .71 and .68 blocks, respectively. Van Burger, a junior middle blocker from Bend, Ore., ranks first on the team in Big Sky Conference matches, averaging .84 blocks per game. Last Friday, Montana State was paced at the net by Grypiuk with four blocks, while Van Burger added three.

As a team, the Bobcats are averaging 1.15 aces per game, while their opponents are converting at 1.84 per contest. MSU has six players in double-digit aces on the year, led by Patti Anderson and Laura Viren with 22 and 21, respectively. Viren, a junior from Prior Lake, Minn., has posted 15 aces in Big Sky Conference play, which ranks fourth overall at .31 winners per game. She notched a career-high three aces against Northern Arizona.

Senior Monique Schaal, a transfer from the University of Texas Pan American, notched a team-high eight kills against Sacramento State. For the match, she tallied a .211 attack mark, while adding eight digs and two blocks. On the season, the native of Twin Falls, Idaho, is averaging 1.25 kills per game, while hitting .109 from the floor. In addition, Schaal has recorded 53 digs and 35 blocks.
