Opening Information
MSU’s recently snapped two-game Big Sky losing streak was its first since 2004.
• NAU ended Montana State’s eight-game Bobcat Stadium winning streak two weeks ago. • Last week’s win was MSU’s only game this year on artificial turf. • The 50-36 win at PSU was the Bobcats’ biggest margin of victory in Portland since 1971.
Stadium Stuff
Kyle Field’s crowd of 79,000+ became the largest ever to watch a Bobcat football game. • MSU’s 7-3 win over Southern Utah marked the fewest total points scored in a game held in Bobcat Stadium, and the fewest in a Bobcat win since the Cats topped Lewis & Clark 7-6 in 1955. • The top five home-opening crowds in Bobcat Stadium (and MSU) history have come, in ascending order, in the past five seasons, topped by the gold-clad throng of 14,217 that saw MSU whip Dixie State. • Topped by the Southern Utah crowd, the top five attendance figures in MSU history for non-conference opponents have come in the past two-plus seasons. The Cats have not won in Cheney’s Woodward Stadium since 1990. • NAU’s win in Bobcat Stadium Saturday was its first since 2001. MSU’s two-game winning streak at NAU’s Walkup Skydome is its first ever, and the four-game winning streak against the Jacks is also MSU’s longest. • Montana State’s 61-0 win over Dixie State to open the home portion of the 2007 season marked the sixth-highest points total in MSU history, with all those contests at home, and the fifth-highest total in Bobcat Stadium’s current configuration. • Bobcat Stadium has hosted 19 consecutive home crowds of at least 12,000. • The NAU sellout was MSU’s first regular season home sellout ever in November, other than for a Cat-Griz game.
Big Sky Bullet Points
• Montana State is 29-14 in Big Sky Conference play in the last five-plus seasons
• The Bobcats’ 29 league wins in that span is second-most in the conference
• MSU dropped from first to second in Big Sky pass defense after playing PSU
Hello, My Name Is...
The Big Sky welcomed four new head coaches this season, including MSU’s Rob Ash. The Bobcats’ first-year coach finished 3-0 against his fellow newcomers.
Ash Escort
In order to promote the Montana Hope Project, which aids Treasure State children in need, a Montana State Trooper escorts Rob Ash during the ‘07 season.
Seeing Red
MSU has converted only 19 of its 36 red zone trips into points this year, but converted 4-of-5 last week at Portland State.
400 Over & Under
MSU has held 13 of its last 15 opponents to less than 400 total yards. Portland State didn’t pass the 400 yard mark until the game had been decided.
Return Remarks
Kory Austin’s 85-yard punt return against Dixie State marked the first time since Nov. 15, 2003, that the Bobcats returned a punt for a touchdown. Austin was 13th nationally (13.2), but doesn’t qualify because he has missed three games.
Lots of Wins
Montana State head coach Rob Ash’s 182 career wins is 24th among active coaches.
The No-Return Policy
Corey Smith’s 90-yard return of the Cat-Griz opening kickoff in 2003 was MSU’s last kickoff return for a score. That streak stands at 44 games. The Bobcats have not allowed a punt return for a touchdown in 53 straight games (since Cal Poly, 2003) or a kickoff return in 74 straight contests.
Returning to Returns
Jon Wanago and Rob Pouliot returned picks for TDs vs. Boise St. in ‘88, MSU’s only two-TD game on int. returns before Mike Beach and Chase Gazzero this year.
Hurtin’
Since the end of spring drills, the Bobcat offense has lost its projected starter at six positions, and at two of those spots also lost the projected backup.
The Turnover Tale
Since the beginning of the 2005 season, MSU is 11-1 when positive in turnover margin, 4-6 when even in turnovers, and 6-6 when giving up more turnovers than it forces. The ‘Cats are +6 this season.
The End Zones Weren’t Muddy
The 10 points Montana State and Southern Utah combined to score on Oct. 6 marked the fewest total points scored in a game in Bobcat Stadium. In consecutive October home games, MSU and its opponents combined for just three touchdowns.
Wins and Stuff
Montana State secured its sixth straight winning season Saturday, the school’s longest such streak since 1956-64. MSU currently owns six straight seasons over .500 in league play, pending this year, and five straight in the Big Sky’s top three.
20 is Terrific
Montana State is 30-7 since 2000 when holding the foe to less than 20 points.
Close Calls
MSU played only three games decided by 14+ points last year, but six of MSU’s 10 2007 tilts have beaten that spread.

...the PSU game: “I thought the defense played very well. It’s too bad that the final stats, in terms of yards and points, came out how they did, because they don’t reflect how we played. The interception-to-touchdown ratio was huge in our favor, and it was important that on our four turnovers we didn’t allow a point. Even though the score makes the game look like a shootout, it was not that type of game. The defense really kept us in it.”
...MSU’s injuries: “If there’s a benefit it’s that some of the young players gain experience for the future, although you never want injuries and I never play for the future. I always say that the only people not surprised when a backup player steps in and plays well is that player, because he’s worked hard and desperately wants to play. We’ve had a lot of players step into that category, guys like Jeff Price, who played well Saturday, (tight ends Joe) Schreibeis and (Kyle) Begger, Jeff Miller played a very solid game. It’s great to see those guys step in, and it’s not that unusual, because they are playing Division I football for a reason, they want to play, and when their chance comes they are very motivated.”
...Montana: “Montana is very well coached, very disciplined, and they play extremely hard. That’s what jumps out at me, they play hard on special teams and they play hard on every snap. Montana is a very complete football team. They always find a way to win. That seems like a self-evident comment, but they have been challenged several times late in games and always find a way to take control. They get a big stop, hit a clutch field goal, go on a long, time-consuming drive, whatever it takes. They do things that are statistically innocuous but which are crucial to winning the game.”
