Second Half Shooting Lifts Montana State Women Past Yellowjackets

“I thought that maybe we had used up all our shots at Idaho,” said MSU third-year head coach Tricia Binford, referring to the Bobcats’ shooting prowess in the season-opener on Friday night, “MSU Billings did a nice job. Fortunately, Jenny Heringer came in and hit three 3-pointers, and Callie Goff and Lyndi Seidensticker also connected and we pulled away.”
Montana State (2-0) opened the game taking a 23-8 lead half way through the opening period following a basket by Sarah Strand. MSU Billings (0-1) closed the margin to 32-26 at intermission.
The Yellowjackets began the second half with a 9-2 run, capturing its first lead since early in the ball game, on a three-pointer by Alira Carpenter at the 17:36 mark.
With the score tied at 42-all with 12:06 remaining, the Bobcats went on a 22-9 run over the next six-minutes, sparked by Heringer’s 11 points. The Yellowjackets would get no closer.
True-freshman Sarah Strand posted a game-high 17 points, while Heringer ended with 15, including a 4-of-4 effort from three-point range.
MSU was led under the boards by Rebecca Mercer and Krislyn Wallace with seven rebounds, apiece. Mercer also added six assists, while Strand added a team-high three steals and three blocks.
For the game, MSU shot 39 percent from the field, and connected on 17-of-21 from the free throw line. The Bobcat defense limited the Yellowjackets to 34 percent from the field and 28 percent from long distance.
MSU ended the game with a 53-38 advantage in rebounding.
“It was really nice to see other kids step-up, when a few of our players were having a tough time buying a basket,” Binford said. “I thought we did a nice job staying with our system, and once some shots started to fall, we were able to pull away.”
MSU Billings was led by Rachel Hanson, who scored 12 points all in the first half, on four-of-five from beyond the arc.
Montana State will play at Texas-Arlington on Nov. 17.
