Bobcats Open Exhibition Season with Win

Bobby Howard has work to do on some little things, Montana State coach Brad Huse said after the freshman led Montana State to a 67-61 exhibition win over UC-Colorado Springs, but he came up big when the Bobcats needed him.
In his first appearance with the Bobcats, Howard shared team-high honors with 17 points. With just over five minutes remaining and the Bobcats leading 51-49, Howard hit a baseline jumper, nabbed a steal on the ensuing Mountain Lions possession, scored a layup next time down the floor, and on MSU's next possession hit a three-pointer to all but seal the win for MSU.
"That's Bobby Howard," Huse said. "He's going to keep coming at you. He's got some things to shore up, it's a big transition from high school, but he has the ability."
With the projected starting backcourt of Casey Durham and Carlos Taylor serving a one-game suspension for a violation of team rules, Montana State leaned on Howard and wings Mecklen Davis (15 points) and Phil Friesen (17 points). Friesen, a junior, hit four of MSU's seven three-pointers.
The Bobcats shot 50% from the field, but only 50% from the charity stripe, and out-rebounded UC Colorado Springs 33-28. The Bobcats committed 27 turnovers in the game, forcing 21.
"I thought our guys were really unsure of themselves," Huse said. They were tentative. That's why we play these (exhibitions) early in the season. I thought we had a good week, and I think we'll keep improving."
Montana State hosts Walla Walla in its exhibition finale on Saturday at 7 pm.
