Fisher Helps Nail Thunderbirds

In a game that amounted to "getting dirty with a bunch of friends," as Montana State linebacker Bobby Daly called MSU's 7-3 win over Southern Utah in muddy Bobcat Stadium on Saturday, one of the most important performances was turned in by a guy whose jersey was mostly clean at the end.
"Fish did a great job," senior quarterback Jack Rolovich said of MSU punter Eric Fisher. The sophomore from Billings averaged 43.9 yards on eight punts, nailing a long of 54 and pinning the Thunderbirds inside the 20 twice.
Rob Ash did Rolovich one better. "You see punts like that (which sail over punt returners' heads), and it's like having a secret weapon."
On a day where field position was of utmost importance, Fisher's contributions stood out. Montana State's final six possessions ended in Fisher punts. All but one pinned the Thunderbirds inside their own 30, and the last two - including the team's final possession - began inside the 20. Fisher averaged 41 yards on the first five of those, then hammered the last punt 54 yards. Southern Utah managed returns on only three of the six second half punts, for a total of 23 yards.
"You have no idea how that feels," said Rolovich, "the difference between being at the 40 (after a punt) and at the 20. It's huge, not just physically but mentally. It just looks like it's so much further (to the end zone)."
Ash wasn't under-selling the role his punter played on Saturday. "I think Eric Fisher's game was hugely important. His punts were spectacular. He really pinned Southern Utah down there."
