Bobcats Spikers Host Hornets

The Montana State volleyball team will host perennial Big Sky Conference power Sacramento State on Saturday night, in Shroyer Gym. SAC has won ten straight Big Sky Conference championships. Currently, the Hornets are 15-3 overall and 4-0 in league action. Sacramento State is also looking to break into the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches poll. The Hornets are currently No. 27 in the nation. Head coach Debby Colberg is in her 32nd and final year at the helm of the Hornet program, and has posted over 800 career victories. She will be inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame in December. On the court, Sacramento State is paced by senior middle hitter Lindsay Haupt, who is averaging 3.48 kills and 1.30 blocks, while hitting .376 from the field. Haupt is this week’s Big Sky Player of the Week. Last fall, the Etna, Calif., native was the league’s tournament MVP. The Hornets are also bolstered by St. Mary’s transfer Missie Stidham, who is averaging a team-best 5.03 kills and 4.43 digs per game. Stidham has been named Big Sky Player of the Week numerous times, and was a National POW, as well.

Miya Malauulu became Montana State’s seventh head coach at the conclusion of the 2002 season. Since then, she has put her own fingerprint on a Bobcat program that has produced four 20-win seasons in the last nine years. Prior to being named head coach, the 1998 graduate of Oregon State University, served as an assistant under Dave Gantt for five seasons. Malauulu came to Bozeman after a successful stint playing for the Beavers. A native of Carson, Calif., she played at OSU from 1994-97. She still holds numerous records at Oregon State and currently ranks fourth all-time in PAC-10 history with 5,368 assists. A two-time OSU most valuable player and an unprecendented four-time Beaver captain, she prepped at Bishop Montgomery High School and played for national club power NIKE-Ichiban, where she garnered USVBA Player of the Year kudos. Malauulu is joined on the bench this season by assistant coaches Erin Naipo and Steve Huntingdale. Naipo, a 2002 graduate of Dartmouth College, was a four-year letterwinner and team captain for the Big Green. She is in her third year at MSU and previously served as assistant coach at Spokane Community College. Huntingdale is in his first season at Montana State, after serving as a volunteer assistant, last fall. Huntingdale is a former Colorado High School Volleyball Coach of the Year (2002, 2003).

Patti Anderson posted a career-high with 18 kills in MSU’s match against Montana...also posted her fifth double-double of the season with a team-high 17 digs...notched a .318 attack mark, an ace and one block...Nicole Grypiuk has tallied double-digit kills in four of MSU’s last five matches...matched a career-high with 12 kills against Montana...in last five matches, Grypiuk is averaging 3.06 kills per game, while hitting .285 from the field...
Laura Viren recorded 17 digs against Montana, giving her nine double-dig matches, including five in-a-row. The Minnesota native has six double-doubles on the year...Montana State has three players averaging 3.00 digs.
The Week That Was:
The Bobcats dropped a 22-30, 31-29, 30-22, 30-22 decision to Montana, last Friday night in front of a season-high 1,287 fans in Shroyer Gym. MSU jumped out to the opening game win, out-hitting the Grizzlies .279 to .113. The second stanza featured 15 ties and seven lead changes, before UM scored the final two points for the win. In the final two games, serve-receive became an issue for the Bobcats, and the squad hit an icy .055 from the floor. Senior Patti Anderson paced the Bobcats with a career-high 18 kills, while adding 17 digs and a .318 attack mark. Also notching a career-high was sophomore outside hitter Nicole Grypiuk, who connected for 12 kills on 34 attempts. Middle blockers Monique Schaal and Kaytlin Van Burger each had five blocks, while Sarah Allen dished out 41 assists. Aside from Anderson, Laura Viren (17), Meghan Albiston (14) and Sarah Allen (12) all had double-digit digs.
Seeing Double:
Senior Patti Anderson and junior Laura Viren have been doubling-up at a consistent clip this season. Anderson has posted ten matches in double-digit digs, including the last eight starts. On the year, the Deer Lodge native has tallied five double-doubles. Viren, an outside hitter from Prior Lake, Minn., leads the team with six double-doubles. In addition, she has notched eight double-digit kill matches and nine in double-figure digs. She has been in double-digit digs in eight of the last nine outings.
Gotta Dig It:
Montana State is averaging 16.12 digs per game. The Bobcats are led this season by freshman libero Meghan Albiston, who is averaging 4.05 saves per game. Last weekend, the Idaho Falls native averaged 3.50 digs per game. Also helping the ‘Cats defensively are Patti Anderson (3.29 dpg), Laura Viren (3.16 dpg) and Sarah Allen (2.16 dpg).
Hard Block Cafe’:
As a team, the Bobcats are averaging 2.30 blocks per game. Last weekend, Montana State and Montana each had 11 team blocks. In all, four Bobcat players recorded four or more blocks in the match, led by Monique Schaal (5), Kaytlin Van Burger (5), Nicole Grypiuk (4) and Laura Viren (4). On the season, MSU is paced by Van Burger and Grypiuk at .85 and .81 blocks, respectively.

In her last five matches, senior Patti Anderson has averaged 3.50 kills and 4.28 digs per game. Against Montana, the native of Deer Lodge had a career-high 18 kills to go along with a team-best 17 digs. For her efforts, Anderson was named Montana State’s Player of the Week.
