Atwood Leads Montana State Harriers at Big Sky Championships

Atwood, a native of Otis Orchards, Wash., covered the 8000-meter course in 24:42. His time helped the Montana State men to a third place finish.
No. 2 Northern Arizona won the men’s title with 22 points, followed by Weber State 55, MSU 95, Idaho State 118, Montana 144, Sacramento State 144, Eastern Washington 146, Portland State 212, and Northern Colorado 285.
Lopez Lomong of NAU won the individual crown with a course record 23:51.
“We had our best race of the season on the men’s side and I’m pleased that Nick Atwood could place in the top ten and earn all-conference accolades,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “He led the race at 3-kilometers, before the rest of the pack caught him on the downhill. Nick ran comfortably with the front group the rest of the race.”
Also contributing to the Bobcat attack were Graydon Curry, 12th, 25:04; Matt Adams, 19th, 25:32; Tyler Noland, 22nd, 25:45; Dan Jackson, 36th, 26:18; Chad Nauman, 41st, 26:30; Carl Nystuen, 47th, 26:40; and Kelvin Daratha, 49th, 26:51.
“After Atwood, the rest of the pack had a very solid race,” Kennedy said. “Curry has been Mr. Consistent all season; Adams rebounded from his race at Pre-Nationals; and freshmen Tyler Noland and Dan Jackson were outstanding.
“For Dan, it was his second race of the season,” Kennedy said. “We just decided this week to have him run and he came through in a big way.”
Elisabeth Driscoll’s bid for a fourth all-conference performance at the Big Sky championships fell short as she finished 14th overall, covering the 5000-meter course in 18:25.
Driscoll helped the Bobcats to a fifth place finish.
Northern Arizona captured the women’s title with 33 points, followed by Weber State 51, Montana 89, Eastern Washington 119, MSU 129, Portland State 175, Idaho State 185, Sacramento State 185 and Northern Colorado 192.
Sariah Long of Weber State took the women’s title with a course record 17:13.
Also contributing for MSU were Kayla Larson, 21st, 18:49; Kala Jacquet, 27th, 19:10; Jayme Larson, 29th, 19:13; Morgan Dunley, 39th, 19:36; Katie Gilboy, 42nd, 19:43; Carrie Gottschalk, 43rd, 19:48 and Anna Glowacki, 48th, 19:58.
“The kids ran well, and unfortunately for Elisabeth it didn’t parlay into Big Sky honors,” Kennedy said. “Kayla Larson might have had the best race of her career, while Kala Jacquet and Jayme Larson also had very strong performances.”
MSU will compete at the NCAA Mountain Region championships in two weeks.
