10/22/2007 12:00:00 AM | Football
INJURY REPORT: QB Jack Rolovich (shoulder) and CB Kory Austin (ankle) missed Saturday’s game, and enter preparation for Northern Colorado listed as questionable. MSU suffered no new injuries Saturday against Sacramento State.
TEAM NOTES
• Montana State now owns eight straight wins in Bobcat Stadium, the longest home win streak since the 1975-77 teams won 11 straight.
• Montana State’s game-clinching interception in the closing minutes Saturday gives the Bobcats 12 interceptions on the season, already the fourth-highest single-season total of the last decade with four games remaining on the 2007 schedule.
• Montana State’s 2007 defense allows 9.8 points a game, a pace that would place it as the third-best scoring defense in home games during the team moved into Bobcat Stadium in 1973 (the 1976 team allowed 9.2 games in the regular season, the 1992 team 8.4).
• Montana State has won three straight against Sacramento State overall, and six straight against the Hornets in Bozeman.
• Montana State’s offense didn’t turn the ball over Saturday, its second time in the last four games without a giveaway, raising the team’s turnover margin on the season to +8.
• The crowd of 14,167 Saturday extends MSU’s sellout string to four games, and MSU’s average attendance of 14,287 is 13th in the FCS.
• The Bobcats have become a meteorologist’s delight, having played three straight home games, and four of the last five games overall, in rain or snow.
• Montana State stands as the second of what could become a three-week streak of nationally-ranked opponents for Sacramento State, as the Hornets face previously 22nd-ranked Eastern Washington next week (the Eagles lost at FBS entry BYU on Saturday). By contrast, Montana State has not yet played a nationally-ranked FCS squad this year (EWU was on a one-week hiatus the week MSU lost in Cheney).
• Montana State is 11th nationally in pass efficiency defense, second in the Big Sky, and 12th in scoring defense, also second in the league.
• The Bobcat defense has held three opponents out of the end zone this season.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES/PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
OFFENSE: Cory Carpenter, QB – 6-2, 210, Sr, The Dalles, OR
Making his first start in over a year, Cory Carpenter led Montana State to a 20-9 win over Sacramento State. After being shut out during a first half in which the Bobcats gained just 109 yards with six first downs, the Bobcat offense scored 20 unanswered points in the second half to erase a 9-0 deficit. Carpenter completed 18 of 31 passes for 244 yards, including a 164 yards passing in the second half. Montana State didn’t turn the ball over Saturday, and Carpenter wasn’t sacked by the Hornets, who led the Big Sky in stats entering the game. With the Bobcats trailing 9-3 early in the fourth quarter, Carpenter connected with tight end Elliott Barnhart on a 39-yard touchdown pass to take a lead the team wouldn’t surrender.
OTHER NOTES: Cory Carpenter spread the ball around effectively Saturday, finding eight receivers for his 18 pass completions, with Derek Green, Jamelle Banks and Demetrius Crawford catching three each… Demetrius Crawford’s 75 yards gave him the team lead for the seventh time in seven games… after failing to catch a touchdown pass in his first three seasons as a Bobcat, tight end Elliott Barnhart has three during his senior season.
DEFENSE: LB Bobby Daly – 6-1, 215, Jr, Helena, MT
Bobby Daly registered 14 tackles, including eight solos, to lead Montana State to its 20-9 home win over Sacramento State on Saturday. Daly also forced two fumbles. Montana State held Sacramento State to just 100 yards, two first downs and three points in the second half on Saturday, as Montana State held an opponent out of the end zone for the third time this season.
OTHER NOTES: Playing like a guided missile, Kevin Retoriano registered six tackles, all solos, while intercepting one pass and breaking up another. The interception and ensuing 36-yard return to the five yard line set up the game-clinching touchdown late in the fourth quarter… Reyshawn Bobo registered Montana State’s only sack Saturday.
SPECIAL TEAMS: P Eric Fisher – 6-1, 191, So, Billings, MT
Playing in difficult weather conditions, Eric Fisher again punted well for Montana State. He averaged 39.7 yards on six punts, nailing a long of 56 and pinning Sacramento State inside the 20 once. Fisher also kicked off effectively, achieving two touchbacks and pinning the Hornets inside the 20 one other time on his five kickoffs. Sacramento State’s average starting field position after kickoffs was its own 21 yard line. Fisher made his most important contribution after the Bobcats had missed two field goals from less than 30 yards in the first half by getting the team on the board with a 27-yard field goal with 46 seconds remaining in the third quarter, then hitting a crucial 32-yarder with 8:08 to play to give MSU a 13-9 lead. The field goals were Fisher’s first two made this year, after missing all three of his attempts in the season opener at Texas A&M. He hadn’t attempted a placement of any kind since.
OTHER NOTES: Michael Sweeney missed both his field goal attempts on Saturday, dropping him to 4-for-9 on the season… Mark Desin returned two punts for 18 yards in Kory Austin’s absence Saturday… David Taylor returned a pair of kickoffs for 56 yards… Will Claggett blocked a field goal attempt on Saturday, and MSU players tipped two of Juan Gamboa’s three field goals.
