“We had moments when things were clicking pretty well,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “However, we were not consistent for a long period of time. It was one step forward, two steps back, and we gave up too many runs at inopportune moments.”
Montana State (1-20, 0-9) was led by Laura Viren with 12 kills and 12 digs, while libero Meghan Albiston registered a team-high 20 saves. The Bobcats were paced at the net by Nicole Grypiuk with six blocks. She also added 11 kills.
Northern Colorado (7-15, 5-4) opened the match with a 13-6 run and held the margin out-hitting the Bobcats .316 to .132.
In the second stanza, MSU rallied from a 15-11 deficit to take a 17-16 advantage following a block by Grypiuk and Demi Dlouhy. UNC answered with a 7-1 run to take a 23-18 lead. MSU rallied back with five unanswered points.
The game was tied three times down the stretch, before the Bobcats broke away with three consecutive points, including a Grypiuk kill and block.
“We got into a good rhythm in game two and fought back from a couple of deficits,” Malauulu said. “I thought our defense was the difference.”
In the third stanza, Northern Colorado rolled to the victory as Montana State hit an icy -.068 from the floor.
The final set featured ten ties and one lead change. MSU jumped out to a 17-10 advantage, before the Bears stormed back with seven straight points. UNC took its first lead at 21-20. The Bears outscored the Bobcats 9-4 down the stretch for the win.
Northern Colorado was paced by Taylor Smith and Kenzie Shreeve with 16 kills, apiece.
MSU will host Northern Arizona, Saturday night in Shroyer Gym.
