Bobcat Game Notes vs. Sacramento State

After losing its first Big Sky game of the season, Montana State returns to friendly environs this weekend, hosting Sacramento State at 1 pm on Saturday in Bobcat Stadium. While Eastern entered last weekend’s game most noted for its high-octane passing attack, the Eagles topped MSU for the fifth straight season by stifling the Bobcat ground game and by running the ball with great success. Montana State’s 22 rushing yards was its fewest since UC Davis held the Bobcats to just two net yards last September.

Kory Austin’s 85-yard punt return against Dixie State marked the first time since Nov. 15, 2003, that the Bobcats returned a punt for a touchdown. Austin is 13th in the nation with 13.2 yards per return.

That means we made them drive the field for their scores, rather than giving up big plays for touchdowns, which we want to do. We scored on one long touchdown, and our other four trips into the red zone produced two field goals and two zeroes, so we have to get better in that area. Offensively, we had a difficult time blocking a couple of their guys, and it seemed they were well-prepared and got hot in their play-calling.”

...Sacramento State: “My worst nightmare of the weekend came when I started watching Sacramento State on Sunday morning. They are a fast football team that played a great game against Montana, and they really played well against Northern Arizona. They are really aggressive on defense, their linebackers are very active, and they lead the Big Sky in sacks by a pretty good margin. Montana scored once on defense and kicked a 54-yard field goal against them, so they really only allowed one long scoring drive last week. (QB) Jason Smith, is all over the field. He’s a tremendous athlete who puts pressure on the defense throwing the ball and running with it. He’s never in the same place two plays in a row. Their new coaching staff has them playing with great enthusiasm.”
