Bobcat Harriers Compete at NCAA Pre-Nationals
10/12/2007 12:00:00 AM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Cross Country
The race is hosted by Indiana State University, and is the site of the 2007 NCAA Championships.
Eighty-three men’s squads and 82 women’s teams will compete.
The Bobcat men will race in the 8000-meter Blue Division beginning at 9 a.m. (MST), while the women’s 6000-meter Blue Division event is slated for 10:20 a.m.
“Following our meet at Notre Dame, the kids were really frustrated with their performances,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “Competing in another nationally prominent race will give us chance to improve upon two weeks ago and give us a better image of ourselves.”
The men’s Blue Division race will feature fifteen teams ranked in the top 40, including #2 Wisconsin, #4 Iona and #6 Oklahoma State.
“The committee did an outstanding job splitting out the field and allowing for good head-to-head competition between the regions,” Kennedy said. “This is a quality field and I’m interested to see how it will shake-out.”
The MSU men will be led by Nick Atwood, who has been the Bobcats’ top runner in its two meets this fall. MSU’s top three will be filled out by Graydon Curry and Matt Adams.
“We’re really going to be looking at how our top three do against the top three runners from the teams we’re competing against,” Kennedy said. “We also want to see a big improvement from our freshmen.”
The Montana State women will face thirteen nationally ranked squads, including #1 Stanford, #4 Minnesota, #7 Rice and #9 Michigan State.
“I’ve felt so far this season that our top three kids are not quite to where I expected them to be at this point in the season,” Kennedy said. “We’re hoping for a break through this weekend. They are very capable of great performances.”
Senior Elisabeth Driscoll has paced MSU this season, followed by Carrie Gottschalk and Kayla Larson.
Following Saturday’s race, the Bobcats will compete at the Big Sky Championships, Oct. 27 in Missoula.
