Bobcat Women Open Basketball Practice Saturday Morning

The Bobcat women’s basketball program has made huge strides under her direction, including the 11th best turn-around in the nation at the NCAA Division I level, last winter.
She took the Bobcats from a 3-23 finish her first season to a 13-16 overall mark in 2006-07, which included a Big Sky Conference tournament appearance.
“We left last year on such a high in terms of the progress of the program,” Binford said. “We want to build on that momentum, and we’ve set the bar even higher for this season.”
Officially, the Bobcat women will open practice on Saturday at 8 a.m., in Worthington Arena, followed by a second session at 2 p.m.
“With our competition dates moved-up, we have to introduce a lot things in a shorter amount of time,” Binford said. “We’re making practices more competitive and are introducing game situations.
“I really like our energy, but our consistency isn’t there yet, and that’s something we struggled with last winter,” Binford added.
The Bobcats return four starters from last season’s squad, including Rebecca Mercer, who was tabbed the 2006-07 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year. The native of Australia averaged 12.3 points and three assists per game.
Other returning starters include Krislyn Wallace, Nubia Garcia and Erica Perry.
Returning to the Bobcat line-up will be 2005-06 starter Jenny Heringer, who sat out last season following surgery on both legs.
Erin Goodman, Brandie Buckless, Anne Phippard, Callie Goff and Jamie Thornton all lettered and will look to make contributions this season, as well.
Newcomers Mara Hoefer, Sarah Strand, Eliza Dy and Lyndi Seidensticker will help bolster the Bobcat depth.
“We have a couple emphases heading into the season,” Binford said. “We want to improve our shooting percentage, and defensively, we need to do a better job staying in place and executing our assignments. If we can do those two things, we can move up the ladder.”
Goodman, a senior from Great Falls, and Wallace, a senior from Hooper, Utah, have been named co-captains.
“These are two outstanding individuals who put the team first; are great motivators; and hold people accountable for their actions, while at the same time giving positive praise,” Binford said.
Montana State will open its season with an exhibition game against MSU-Northern on Nov. 1.
