The cross-state men’s basketball rivalry resumes this week as the ‘Cats travel to Missoula on Saturday to face the Griz. Montana State leads the all-time series 143-131. Last year, the ‘Cats lost both meetings with the Grizzlies. This is the first meeting for both head coaches Brad Huse (MSU) and Wayne Tinkle (Montana). Going into the game this week, Montana has a 1-2 conference record, having lost two on the road to Sacramento State and Eastern Washington, and won on the road against Portland State. The Saturday game will be Montana’s first home conference game of the season. The Bobcats first home conference game will be Jan. 18 against Weber State.
Last Week:
Jan. 6: lost at Weber State, 63-84
Weber State capitalized on a seemingly endless wave of free throws and strong finishes to each half, beating Montana State 84-63 in Ogden on Saturday. Nick Dissly led the Bobcats with 21 points, while Carlos Taylor had a dozen.

The Bobcats continue their conference homestand this week hosting rival Montana on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast in Bozeman on KBZK (air channel 7). Montana leads the all-time series between the two clubs, 60-17. Last year, the Bobcats lost twice to the Griz. Montana comes into the contest with a 14-1 record overall and a 2-0 conference record with wins over Eastern Washington and Portland State.

Jan. 8: beat Portland State, 72-63
After shooting 49 percent from the field in the opening period, the Montana State women’s basketball team converted only 5-of-28 attempts in the second stanza for 18 percent, as Eastern Washington rallied from a 13-point deficit to record a 69-66 victory in the Big Sky opener for both squads. Montana State was led in scoring by Whitney Connolly, who came off the bench to notch 18 points. Rebecca Mercer and Perry also hit double-digits with 12 and ten points, respectively.
Sophomore Nubia Garcia scored a team-high 16 points on eight-of-11 from the field to lift the Montana State women’s basketball team to a 72-63 win over Portland State. For the game, MSU shot 43 percent from the field, while holding the Vikings to 32 percent. Montana State also held a commanding 49-37 advantage in rebounding. The Bobcats were paced under the boards by Krislyn Wallace and Garcia with ten and eight rebounds, respectively. MSU senior Alyssa Nelson recorded a game and career-high seven steals, while adding nine points, four rebounds and four assists.
Indoor Track and Field
Montana State hosts the MSU Invite Jan. 8-9 in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. The open meet will feature MSU and unattached athletes in indoor events. The women will complete their competition on Monday and the men will finish up on Tuesday. The next indoor track event will be Jan. 19 when MSU hosts the Montana State Open beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

The Montana State men’s alpine team had five skiers finish among the top 20 in the slalom event at the 2007 MSU Invitational, Sunday afternoon in Big Sky. Freshman Toby Lamar of Aspen, Colo., paced MSU finishing 8th overall with a two-run time of 1:29.09. He was followed by Don Brockett, 9th, 1:29.15, Cory Harris, 14th, 1:29.82, Robbie Massie, 15th, 1:29.95, and Andre Hokholt, 18th, 1:30.31. Also contributing for the Bobcats were Tyler Smedsrud, 25th, 1:34.98, and Kyle Taylor, 38th, 1:47.88. As a group, the Montana State squad scored 62.5 points, second only to defending national champion Colorado, who posted 80.5 points.
The MSU women had a tough day as returning All-America Spela Bertoncelj and freshman standout Carmel McElroy both fell on the hill. The Bobcats were led by Amy Lattimer, 21st, 1:34.13. She was followed by Gillian Hearn, 24th, 1:35.25, Chichi Williams, 30th, 1:38.60, Kelly Ryan, 35th, 1:42.04, Gina Gassman, 42nd, 1:44.53, Gretchen Glasser, 44th, 1:46.73, Theresa Norell, 45th, 1:49.37, Kristi Knaub, 1:49.49, Spela Bertoncelj, 49th, 1:51.39, and Sonja Jennings, 53rd, 2:22.02.
After the first event, CU leads with 152.5 points. The Buffaloes are followed by Denver 129, Nevada 120, New Mexico 118, Utah 101, MSU 96.5, Alaska-Anchorage 85, Western State 74 and Whitman 44. On Saturday, the giant slalom races were canceled due to bad weather conditions. The MSU Invitational will conclude with the Nordic events Jan. 19-20.
