Bobcat Women Pillage Vikings

Montana State (6-8, 1-1) used an 8-0 run to close out the first half to take a 36-27 advantage at intermission.
In the second stanza, the Bobcats built a 56-36 advantage following an Alyssa Nelson layin with 11:21 remaining. Portland State (4-11, 0-2) cut the margin to 62-52 with 4:36 left on a pair of Heather Arns free throws.
MSU sophomore Brandie Buckles hit a three-pointer to push the lead back to 13-points to secure the win.
“I was very happy with our defense early in the game,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “When we got the lead we went away from it and it showed.
“However, we were able to execute late, and we hit some shots when we needed them.”
Also hitting double-digits for the Bobcats were Buckless with 15 points and Rebecca Mercer with 11. Buckless, a sophomore from Whitefish, converted four-of-eight from the field, including three 3-pointers.
“Brandie gave us a good spark, and that was something we missed in our loss to Eastern Washington on Thursday night,” Binford said. “We are getting great contributions from our bench.”
For the game, MSU shot 43 percent from the field, while holding the Vikings to 32 percent. Montana State also held a commanding 49-37 advantage in rebounding. The Bobcats were paced under the boards by Krislyn Wallace and Garcia with ten and eight rebounds, respectively.
MSU senior Alyssa Nelson recorded a game and career-high seven steals, while adding nine points, four rebounds and four assists.
Portland State was led by Arns with a game-high 18 points.
The Bobcat defense held PSU’s Kelsey Kahle to seven points. Kahle entered the game as the Big Sky’s second leading scorer, averaging 18.4 points per game.
Montana State will host Montana on Thursday in Worthington Arena.
