MSU Visits Weber State Saturday

Montana State’s difficult four-game league-opening tour of the Big Sky continues on Saturday, when MSU visits Weber State at 7:05 pm. MSU and Weber each embody the Big Sky’s topsy-turvy nature, earning unexpected road wins just before the New Year. Montana State followed its exhilerating win at Eastern Washington with a loss at Portland State, while Weber lost at home to Idaho State a five days after capping a sweep of the UNC-NAU road trip. MSU (Brad Huse) and Weber (Randy Rahe) sport two of the Big Sky’s four first-year head coaches this season.

On Weber State: “Weber State had a great non-conference season, and started the league season strong by winning two road games. In some ways they are similar to how they’ve been. They play hard, they execute well in the half-court. They use David Patten very effectively. Weber shoots 12-to-14 three-pointers a game, but they are very strong in the low post and they’re effective penetrating.” On the Bobcats: “Early in the year, when we fell behind by 12 or 15 points in a game, you could see the wind coming out of their sails, but the guys really hung in there (last) weekend. After winning at Eastern Washington, something we hadn’t dealt with for a while, they found a way to make a run at Portland State and we had a couple chances to make it a one-possession game late. There are a lot of unknowns the first time through the league, and that really makes for some fun battles the second time through. We’ll have to handle what we see from Weber State this weekend.”

After beginning the year with back-to-back league road wins (at Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona), Weber State lost Thursday night in its league home opener, 58-55 to Idaho State... Last Time Out
Montana State closed 2006 in solid fashion, grabbing a win at Eastern Washington and battling Portland State in the back end of the league-opening road swing. Carlos Taylor nailed a buzzer-beating three-pointer to seal the win at Eastern, while Nick Dissly logged his third career double-double (11/10) that game.
Three After Three
MSU has hit at least one three-pointer in the last 367 games. From 1986 to late ‘92-93 MSU rolled up 197 straight games with a trey, giving MSU at least one three in 564 of the last 565 games.
Bombin’
Although Brad Huse has made it clear that his teams won’t rely on three-point field goals to a degree that makes it a one-dimensional outfit, the Bobcats have shown flashes of proficiency from behind the arc. In fact, the Bobcats nailed a school-record 15 triples against Great Falls and stands second in the Big Sky with 7.54 three-pointers a game despite shooting 33% from beyond the arc, seventh in the converence.
Glasswork
Montana State’s rebounding work stands as perhaps the team’s most pleasant surprise this season. MSU averages 36.4 boards a game, fourth in the league, but is tied for the Big Sky lead in rebound margin at +2.8 with NAU.
The Glass Master
Much of MSU’s rebounding resurgence is due to the play of Ted Morris, who is in the Big Sky’s top 10 in rebounding. Portland State snapped a five-game Bobcat streak of out-rebounding the opponent.
Triple Threats
Two of MSU’s three in-state starters are moving up the school’s three-point charts. Senior Nick Dissly has 130 three-pointers in his career, ninth in school history, while junior Casey Durham has 106 treys, 15 short of wiping Johnny Mack’s name from that list.
Stalking 1,000
Nick Dissly continues a pace that will move him well into MSU’s 1,000-Point Club. Dissly enters the Weber game with 895 career points, and could finish with just over 1,100 in his career. That wouldn’t crack the school’s top 20 list in scoring, but it would grab for him the honor as MSU’s most productive scorer ever from Bozeman.
First-Year Facts
Brad Huse is working against history during his first season as MSU’s head coach. Since 1960, only two of the school’s seven head coaches posted a winning mark in his first season... Huse is the third straight Bobcat basketball coach to have previously served as an MSU assistant... MSU has now been coached by a native Montanan for 17 straight years.
