Bobcat Skiers Begin 2007 Season on Home Slope

The Montana State men’s and women’s ski teams will begin their 2007 season hosting the MSU Invitational Jan. 6-7 at Big Sky. The alpine events will take place on Tippy’s Tumble. The Nordic races will be held Jan. 19-20.
“We’re excited to get the season going,” said MSU Director of Skiing, Dan Brelsford. “We’ve been training very well and I’m excited to see how our veterans, as well as the newcomers, compete.”
On Saturday, the alpine giant slalom race will begin with the first run at 10 a.m., followed by the second run at 1 p.m. The slalom races will take place on Sunday starting at 10 a.m., as well.
Competing this weekend will be defending NCAA champion Colorado, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Denver, Western States, Boise State, and Alaska-Anchorage.
All-America performer Spela Bertoncelj will pace the MSU’s women’s squad, with Chichi Williams also looking for a strong finish. According to Brelsford, two newcomers will also look to make an impression.
Freshman Carmel McElroy (Calgary, Alberta) and Amy Lattimer (Sault St. Marie, Ontario) could break into the top ten.
“Spela has been a force in the training runs,” Brelsford said. “The other kids have made big improvements, as well.”
The Bobcat men’s team will be led by 2006 NCAA qualifier Cory Harris. Also looking to contribute will be seniors Robbie Massie and Tyler Smedsrud.
According to Brelsford, newcomers to keep on eye on include Toby Lamar (Aspen, Colo.) and Andre Hokholt (Oslo, Norway), who is a transfer from Western States.
