Poor Second Half Shooting Sinks Bobcat Women

“We had a good week preparing for their defensive pressure and we came out on fire,” said MSU second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “However, we didn’t adjust to their change in defense in the second half and it cost us.
“We weren’t moving the ball; we were walking the ball up the floor and we certainly didn’t knock down our shots.”
Montana State (5-8, 0-1) trailed by six points early in the contest, before outscoring Eastern Washington (6-8, 1-0) 25-13 in the final ten minutes of the half to enter intermission with a 45-34 advantage.
The Bobcats built their largest lead of the game at 49-36 on a Krislyn Wallace layup with 18:16 remaining.
MSU then went stone cold over the next eight minutes, as the Eagles closed to within 49-48 with 12:01 left.
The Bobcats reestablished a 53-48 advantage, before a Joanna Chadd three-pointer with 3:59 remaining gave EWU a 64-62 lead.
With the score tied at 64-all, Ashley Knight hit a trey to push the EWU lead to 67-64. MSU’s Erica Perry then nailed a shot with a toe on the 3-point line to close the margin to 67-66 with 53-seconds left.
Chadd sealed the win for EWU on a jumper with 21-seconds remaining.
“I thought Erica Perry had a nice game for us,” Binford said. “We know we can knock those shots down. We played a great first half, but just didn’t respond when we needed too.”
Montana State was led in scoring by Whitney Connolly, who came off the bench to notch 18 points. Rebecca Mercer and Perry also hit double-digits with 12 and ten points, respectively.
EWU was paced by Phynique Allen with 18 points, including a 7-of-11 effort from the free throw line.
For the game, MSU shot 35 percent from the field, while EWU hit at 46 percent, including 54 percent in the second stanza.
The Eagles held a 43-39 advantage in rebounding. MSU was paced under the boards by Krislyn Wallace with a game-high eight rebounds.
Montana State will host Portland State on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Worthington Arena.
