Dear Diary: Planes, Buses and Food

We are about 2/3 of the way through the season, and we really feel like we are in a routine.
The revolving schedule of class, practice, weights, film and games leaves me looking back on the past few months and wondering where the time went. I have so many amazing memories from this season already but it really seems like just a few days ago that I was moving to Bozeman..
We are currently in the middle of the conference schedule, and have many road trips coming up.
I have the pleasure of looking forward to squeezing my 6-4 frame into a space designed for someone 5-4. It doesn’t matter if we take a plane or a bus; I always end up squished and numb from sitting for so long. I thought that four-hour bus rides in high school were bad, but I must say that the college travel schedule is much worse. At least in high school we would stay in the same state. In many of our road trips this year we end up traveling all over the western United States. For example, our last trip took us from Montana to Utah then back through Idaho, and our next trip is taking us to Washington then down to Oregon.
When we first started traveling I was convinced that flying would be the life of luxury. I would love flying to all our games. As it turns out I had a very optimistic view of flying. I guess I didn’t realize just how small the planes were going to be. I have come to not enjoy flying as much as I thought I would, but I still enjoy it over bus rides.
Both buses and planes have their own positive aspects, but I have decided that I will take long layovers and small planes over 7 hours straight of winding roads anytime. My preference for planes might have something to do with the fact that I do tend to get a little nauseous when riding a bus for a long time.
Whether we are riding a bus or a plane, we always have plenty of time to sit and think about the important things in life, and after we take the half-hour to do that we are left with a lot of time to fill. You would think that the countless hours on a bus or in an airport would be the perfect time to study, but the truth is that college students don’t really like to study unless it’s Sunday night.
So, we generally fill our time one of two ways. Our favorite pass time is to sleep! We never seem to get enough of this sweet nectar of life, so when we get the chance to sleep a little more we take it. If we aren’t napping we often like to watch movies on a laptop or (on the bus) the TV. If nobody brought any good movies we can always watch “Cars” with Justin, Coach Binford’s son. I swear he has seen that movie 200 times, but he still seems to love it.
The nice thing about road trips is the food. After eating cafeteria food for half a year, any chance to eat out is much appreciated. We usually go to really nice places too. It seems that the night before our game is the time when we go to the really good places. Olive Garden, Chili’s, and numerous steak houses are just some of our favorites. I don’t think I have ever eaten so much steak in my life, but I love it! When game day comes around we usually eat a catered meal in our hotel. Now it’s not steak, but the chicken, potatoes and pasta fills us up right so we can go out and play hard.
No matter where we go or how we travel, one thing always stays the same: traveling is tiring. You wouldn’t think that six hours of napping and watching movies would take it out of you, but by the time we get to the hotel (usually around 7 pm) I’m ready to go to bed. A hot shower and comfy bed is all I really need to feel right at home on the road.
