NAU Inside Game Too Much for Bobcats

“Rebounding and post defense were the key to this game, and we didn’t get the job done,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “Megan Porter had a great game, both on the offensive and defensive ends.”
Northern Arizona (13-8, 6-2) held a 44-35 advantage in rebounding, including several offensive boards during crucial possessions.
“We needed to take care of the details,” Binford said. “We didn’t do a good job containing (NAU).”
Montana State (8-11, 3-4) was led by junior college transfer Krislyn Wallace with a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds. The native of Hooper, Utah connected on six-of-11 from the field.
Also in double-figures for the Bobcats was Brandie Buckless with 11, including a 3-of-4 outing from 3-point range.
Buckless, a sophomore from Whitefish, filled in for MSU’s leading scorer Rebecca Mercer, who was sidelined with an illness.
NAU also played without its leading scorer, as Alyssa Wahl was suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules.
“With both leading scorers out of the game, things were pretty even coming into the game,” Binford said. “However, we didn’t play well in the first half. When we got the lead in the second half, we weren’t able to sustain the momentum.”
NAU held a 29-20 advantage at intermission, before MSU opened the second stanza with a 12-1 run to take a 32-30 lead with 15:15 left following a Buckless three-pointer.
With the game tied at 34-all, and 13:51 remaining- NAU took the lead for good following a layup by Ashley Ingle.
For the game, MSU shot 32 percent from the field, but only hit 25 percent from the floor in the opening period.
MSU will travel to Eastern Washington on Feb. 1.
