Bobcat Women Hosts Two in Worthington Arena

The Montana State women’s basketball team will play a pair of Big Sky Conference home games this weekend in Worthington Arena. The Bobcats will host league newcomer Northern Colorado, Thursday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. MSU will conclude its homestand with Northern Arizona, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.
ON THE AIR:
All Montana State women’s basketball games will be carried live on My 103.5 FM. Veteran broadcaster Mark Martello will handle play-by-play duties for his second straight season. Martello will begin his broadcast with the Bobcat Pregame Show, originating 15-minutes prior to tip-off.
SERIES FACTS:
Montana State holds a 1-0 record in its all-time series against Northern Colorado. The only meeting between the two schools took place Feb. 22, 1980 as the Bobcats defeated the Bears 88-71 in Greeley. MSU owns a 28-13 advantage in its all-time series with Northern Arizona going back to the 1987-88 campaign. Last year, the two squads split its series, each winning on its home court.
FAST BREAKS:
With its win over Idaho State, the Bobcats snapped a seven-game losing skid against the Bengals…MSU had a well balanced attack last weekend, as four players hit double-figures against Weber State, and five accomplished the feat against Idaho State…hitting double-digits in both games were Krislyn Wallace, Rebecca Mercer, and Nubia Garcia…Garcia had a big weekend for the Bobcats totaling 29 points, 19 rebounds, six steals, three blocks and an assist…Mercer averaged 16.5 points per game and converted 7-of-11 from 3-point range…Despite being out-rebounded in both games over the weekend, the Bobcats shot 44 percent from the field and 54 percent (13-24) from long distance…the Bobcats have reached double-figures in steals in 11-of-17 games this winter…Montana State has made at least one 3-pointer in its last 88 consecutive games. The last time MSU went without a trey was Dec. 22, 2003 at UTEP, when it went 0-14 from beyond the arc.
BOBCAT PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Krislyn Wallace had a big weekend for the Bobcats. In their 67-66 loss at Weber State on Thursday, Wallace posted ten points and five rebounds, while shooting 56 percent from the field. She notched her second double-double of the season with a career-high 18 points and ten rebounds in MSU’s victory at Idaho State. Against the Bengals, she shot 67 percent from the floor, while adding two steals and an assist. On the weekend, Wallace averaged 14 points and 7.5 rebounds, while shooting 62 percent from the field.
WHO’S HOT:
*Nubia Garcia reached double-figure scoring in both games for the Bobcats, last weekend. The native of Chihuahua, Mexico posted a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds in MSU’s win over Idaho State. On the weekend, she averaged 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds, while adding six steals and three blocks.
*Rebecca Mercer found her shooting touch at Idaho State. The junior transfer from Perth, Australia posted two double-figure scoring games, last weekend, including 18 points against Weber State. Mercer also found her touch from beyond the arc, connecting on 7-of-11 3-pointers. On the weekend, she averaged 16.5 points and 2.5 assists per game.
*Alyssa Nelson regained her scoring prowess in MSU’s win over ISU. Against the Bengals, Nelson chipped in 14 points on five-of-nine from the field.
SHORING UP THE ‘D’:
Last winter, Montana State ranked last in the Big Sky in scoring margin, rebounding offense, rebounding margin, scoring defense and defensive rebounds. Heading into this season, MSU head coach Tricia Binford placed emphasis on shoring up the Bobcat defense. Here’s a look at where the Bobcats currently rank in the same categories entering the Big Sky Conference season: scoring margin (5th), rebounding offense (4th), rebounding margin (6th), scoring defense (4th), and defensive rebounds (5th).
IT TAKES A THIEF:
Montana State is third in the Big Sky averaging 10.71 steals per game. The Bobcats have three players ranked among the top 10 in the league for steals. They include: Alyssa Nelson (2nd, 2.59), Erica Perry (3rd, 2.35), and Nubia Garcia (8th, 1.82).
A WELL BALANCED DIET:
The Bobcats do not have a player ranked among the top 10 in the Big Sky in scoring; however, MSU has four players ranked from Nos. 11-20. They include: Rebecca Mercer (12th, 11.9), Alyssa Nelson (15th, 10.6), Nubia Garcia (17th, 10.2) and Whitney Connolly (19th, 9.7).
A VIEW FROM THE PINE:
Montana State has received excellent support from its bench this season. MSU’s eight players coming off the pine are averaging 22.7 points per game. The group is led by senior Whitney Connolly, who is averaging 9.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest.
SMART COOKIES:
The 2005-06 Montana State basketball team ranked 5th in the nation for cumulative grade-point average by the WBCA, with a 3.46 gpa. All ten players on the roster garnered All-Big Sky Conference Academic honors. Alyssa Nelson, Scotta Morton and Whitney Connolly are three-time All-Big Sky Academic picks.
