Montana State’s (7-10, 2-3) front court tandem of Krislyn Wallace and Nubia Garcia played a huge part in the victory, off-setting the effort of Idaho State’s (6-10, 2-2) Natalie Doma.
Wallace ended the game with a career-high 18 points and ten rebounds, while Garcia chipped in 16 points and ten rebounds.
Doma finished with a game-high 29 points and 17 rebounds.
“I’m proud of our kids,” said MSU second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “We got over the hump of getting a lead, and then finishing a game off the way we know we can.”
MSU trailed early in the contest 19-8 at the 12:06 mark of the opening stanza following a pair of Jeni Boesel free throws. The Bobcats fought back with a 28-19 run to tie the score at 36-all heading into intermission.
“We showed a lot of character in the first half,” Binford said. “We got off to a slow start, but we kept chipping away and put ourselves into a position to win the game.”
In the second half, the lead changed hands five times, before MSU fought back from a 57-52 deficit with 12:27 remaining with an 11-5 run to go ahead 61-60 on a Garcia layup with 9:26 left.
MSU never relinquished the lead down the stretch converting 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute to secure the win.
Also scoring in double-figures for the Bobcats were Rebecca Mercer 15, Brandie Buckless 15, and Alyssa Nelson 14.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 43 percent from the field, including a 48 percent effort in the second half. MSU also connected on 8-of-14 from 3-point range.
Montana State will host Northern Colorado on Thursday night in Worthington Arena.
