Bobcat Women’s Nordic Contingent Is Here to Stay

“We had three in the top ten and that shows last week wasn’t a fluke,” said MSU senior Mandy Bowden. “Staggered starts are always tough, because you don’t know until the results are posted how everyone fared. We all went out hard”
Bowden, of Cumberland, Maine, finished third overall in the women’s 5-kilometer skate race in a time of 14:42.10. She was followed by Jamie Woelk, 7th, 14:59. 04, and Claire Rennie, 10th, 15:02.61.
Woelk, a freshman from Gunnison, Colo., wore the yellow jersey on Friday due to her first place finish at Utah, last Sunday.
“Wearing the yellow jersey is a little intimidating because of the expectations,” Woelk said. “I skied by myself today; I didn’t see anyone in front or behind me. I don’t really worry about what other racers are doing.”
As a trio, the Bobcat Nordic contingent recorded 75 points in the event, second only to defending national champion Colorado, who tallied 79 points overall.
CU’s Maria Grevsgaard won the women’s title in a time of 14:16.52.
The Buffaloes lead the MSU Invitational with 306.5 points. They are followed by Denver 259, Utah 223.5, Alaska-Anchorage 214.5, Nevada 214, MSU 204.5, New Mexico 196, Western State 132, Whitman 86 and Wyoming 14.
Other MSU finishers included Karoline Teien, 32nd, 16:04.56, Fraiser Opel, 33rd, 16:10.28, Rachel Goldstein, 38th, 16:29.65, and Maggie Casey, 46th, 17:10.31.
The Montana State men’s team was paced by local product Nathan Park, who finished 19th overall, covering the 10-kilometer skate event in 27:24.17.
He was followed by Christian Coe, 30th, 28:18.20, Tim Downey, 31st, 28:21.31, Mike Gleason, 35th, 28:38.93, Chris McMahon, 41st, 29:48.16, and Sam Viavant, 52nd, 31:17.33.
Kit Richmond of CU won the men’s crown in 25:40.45
The Nordic portion of the MSU Invitational will conclude on Saturday with the classic events. The final event, the giant slalom, will be held Feb. 4 in Eldora, Colo., as a make-up race in Winter Park. The original giant slalom race at Big Sky was canceled due to inclement weather.
