Bobcat Women Drop Heartbreaker in Ogden

“Down the stretch we gave up three offensive boards and didn’t execute at the end and it slipped away,” said MSU second-year head coach Tricia Binford. “We played a great first half and suffered a second-half let down that saw a 15-point swing.
“We managed to put ourselves in a position to win, be we just couldn’t convert the key possession.”
Montana State (6-10, 1-3) led 34-27 at intermission, but the Bobcats saw their lead evaporate as Weber State (10-8, 5-0) staked a 21-6 run to begin the second stanza.
Trailing 50-42 at the 10:13 mark following a WSU basket by Sara Tuomi, MSU went on a 14-5 run to take a 56-55 lead with 5:17 remaining on a Rebecca Mercer three-pointer.
The lead changed hands three times down the stretch before a Tashina Taylor layup with 1:20 left gave the Wildcats a 65-64 advantage. A pair of Tuomi free throws with 20-seconds remaining pushed the margin to three-points.
An Erica Perry layin with two-seconds left closed the final margin.
“It was a heartbreaker,” Binford said. “We received a lot of good performances and fought the entire game. We had a shot; we just need to get a road breakthrough in these close games.”
Leading the Bobcats was Mercer with 18 points, while Nubia Garcia 13, Perry 12 and Krislyn Wallace 10 also hit double-digits.
Weber State was paced by Chelsey Warburton with a game-high 27 points, including five 3-pointers.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 44 percent from the field, while limiting Weber State to 37 percent. The Wildcats converted 15-of-19 from the line, while MSU went to the charity stripe five times, converting on all attempts.
Weber State also held a 45-29 edge in rebounding. MSU was led under the boards by Garcia with a team-high nine rebounds.
MSU will play at Idaho State on Saturday afternoon.
