How Sweep It Is: Bobcats 4th at Utah Invite

The fourth place finish is MSU’s highest since the program was resurrected with the women’s squad in 1994, and combined with the men’s program four years ago.
“This was our first meet of the season where alpine and Nordic skied on the same week, and our kids really stood up to the challenge,” said MSU Director of Skiing and alpine coach Dan Brelsford. “It is the result of our fall training and a great recruiting class.
“It was exciting to see it all pan out,” Brelsford added. “It’s rewarding to see the program flourish. We turned a lot of heads and received a lot of attention.”
Even more impressive was the 1-2-3 finish of the Montana State women in Sunday’s 10-kilometer skate race.
Freshman Jamie Woelk of Gunnison, Colo., placed first overall in a time of 34:16.1. She was followed closely by Mandy Bowden (sr., Cumberland, Maine), 2nd, 34:16.6, and Claire Rennie (so., Ottawa, Ontario), 3rd, 34.16.9.
“When (Bobcat Nordic coach) Grethe called and told me about the sweep, I thought she was pulling my leg,” Brelsford said. “That is an amazing sweep. It shows a lot of commitment by the athletes to train year round, and the team dynamic that the Nordic coaches have implemented.”
The sweep is believed to be a first in the Nordic event in NCAA Western Region competition.
“I know Denver did it on the men’s side, but in my memory I can’t remember a women’s team sweeping,” said Colorado Sports Information Director and RMISA historian David Plati. “I know we never have at CU, the only other possibility is Utah in the 1980s.”
The clean sweep gave MSU 87 points in the event- the highest score possible.
Defending national champion Colorado won the Utah Invitational with 552 points, followed by Utah 537, Denver 522, MSU 441, Alaska-Anchorage 411, New Mexico 390, Nevada 370, Western State 295, Whitman 123 and Wyoming 29.
In the men’s 15-kilometer skate race, Nathan Park (jr., Bozeman) paced the Bobcats, finishing 10th overall in a time of 43:45. Also contributing to the MSU effort were Chris Coe, 19th, 45:06,Tim Downey, 21st, 45:23, Daichi Ito, 25th, 45.58, Mike Gleason, 32nd, 46:44 and Sam Viavant, 41st, 48:37.
Matt Gelso of Colorado won the individual men’s crown in a clocking of 42:22.
Woelk and Gelso became the first Americans in NCAA West Region history to capture the event since it went coed in 1983.
The MSU women’s alpine contingent also had a strong showing on Sunday, racking up 70 points and finishing just one point behind event winner Denver.
Freshman Carmel McElroy (Calgary, Alberta) finished second in the giant slalom with a two-run total of 2:05.04. Also contributing to the Bobcat attack were Amy Lattimer (fr., Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario), 9th, 2:06.77, and Spela Bertoncelj (sr., Slovenia), 12th, 2:07.07.
On the men’s side, freshman Toby Lamar of Aspen, Colo., guided the Bobcat men, placing 12th in the slalom race with a two-run clocking of 1:34.48. He was followed by Robbie Massie, 19th, 1:36.66, and Don Brockett, 20th, 1:37.55.
