Balanced Attack Lifts Lady Griz to Win Over Bobcat Women

“It was a combination of Montana hitting their shots, and us, not contesting some shots,” said second-year Bobcat head coach Tricia Binford. “Montana doesn’t make too many mistakes, and we showed some inconsistencies.”
Montana State (6-9, 1-2) trailed 17-14 following a Krislyn Wallace basket at the 13:22 mark of the opening stanza.
Montana (15-1, 3-0) countered with a 7-0 run to push the margin to 24-10 at the 11:14 mark and entered intermission with a 50-38 advantage.
“Montana shot 63 percent from the field in the first half and that’s tough to overcome,” Binford said. “However, we only trailed by 12-points. In the second half, I thought we played better defense, but we just lost our focus from time-to-time.”
Montana State was by led Wallace, who was MSU’s only player in double-digits with 13 points.
Freshman guard Erica Perry shadowed Morales all night and held the UM standout below her scoring average, while forcing her into a season-high seven turnovers.
Offensively, Perry contributed eight points, five steals and four rebounds.
“I’m proud of the way Erica played,” Binford said. “She showed some determination and pride.”
MSU finished the game shooting 34 percent from the field, while the Lady Griz hit at a 51 percent clip. Montana also held a 43-34 advantage in rebounding.
The Bobcats were paced under the boards by Wallace with five rebounds.
Aside from Morales, also scoring in double-figures for Montana were Johanna Closson 17, Britney Lohman 15, Tamara Guardipee 13, and Sonya Rogers 10.
MSU will play at Weber State on Thursday night.
