Bobcat Spikers Fry Rice in First Match of Arizona Classic

MSU will face No. 21 Arizona this evening at 8 p.m. (MST).
Purnell, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Red Deer, Alberta, also recorded a .375 attack mark and a career-matching five digs. Also in double-digit kills for Montana State (3-4) were Laura Viren 14 and Kim Stonehouse 10.
“We handled them pretty well in the first two games,” said MSU fourth-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “We handled the ball well and got our outsides and a middle putting the ball away.”
In the third game, Rice (3-4) out-hit the Bobcats .105 to -.071, and cruised past MSU in the fourth game, as well.
“Our serve-receive broke down, and our decision making was pretty poor,” Malauulu added.
In the final set, the Owls got out to an early 4-0 lead, before the Bobcats rattled off a 9-2 run to put the game away.
“We persevered, and that’s an important lesson to get through,” Malauulu said. “Going five and getting the win is an experience that will help us in conference play.”
Defensively, Patti Anderson paced the Bobcats with a career-high 25 digs. The Deer Lodge native also added seven kills, a .375 attack mark and two aces. Also in double-figure digs were Kandice Kelly 20 and Viren 15. Middle blocker Angela Wiebe led MSU at the net with a match-high seven blocks.
Tessa Kuykendall paced Rice with 19 kills and seven blocks.
