Women's Golf Opens Season at Colorado State Invite

The two-day event runs Sept. 11-12 at the Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins.
On Friday, head coach Brittany Bayse announced the top five MSU golfers for the tournament trip: junior Kelly Gillum, sophomore LaRae Smith, junior Kate Steffanich, sophomore Shannon Donegan, and junior Stephanie Simmons, all veterans of last year’s squad.
The Bobcats return seven golfers from last year and add freshman Elise Nelsen from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Bayse has high expectations for this year’s squad. “Everyone has worked hard to qualify for the top five spots and these ladies want to play well,” Bayse said. “This is Kelly’s (Gillum) home course, and I feel confident that her game is more than ready and she should have a strong finish here.” Gillum fired a Bobcat best-ever 225 at last spring's Big Sky Championships.
“If the team brings the game that they know each has, then we will do well. We have a strong bunch of players and each one is pushing each other to do better. We need to get started strong this year and this is the perfect time to do it,” Bayse said.
The tournament begins with 36 holes on Monday and finishes with 18 on Tuesday. The field for this year’s tournament is the most competitive in the event’s history. The 17-team field includes Arkansas State, Baylor, California, Colorado, Colorado State, Kansas, Long Beach State, and Wyoming. It also includes six Big Sky Conference schools: Portland State, Weber State, Northern Colorado, Montana, Eastern Washington, and Montana State. Shotgun start is at 8:30 a.m. Monday.
