TEAM NOTES
• Montana State’s win over Colorado on Saturday extended the Bobcats’ winning streak over the Buffs to three games covering 80 years (MSU won in Boulder in 1926 and in Bozeman in 1927)
• The victory snapped a 19-game losing streak by Big Sky teams to I-A opponents, and snapped MSU’s 18-game skid against I-A schools. MSU’s last victory over a I-A came in 1984 when the Bobcats beat Fresno State, with current head coach Mike Kramer serving as an assistant to head coach Dave Arnold (whose son EJ is MSU’s tight ends coach)
• While Saturday’s win was a rarity for the Bobcats, it was not for Mike Kramer, who beat Idaho, Boise State and Utah State as head coach at Eastern Washington.
• MSU is now 3-24 all-time against I-A opponents (beginning with 1979, when the I-AA sub-classification began), with both of the previous wins coming over Fresno State
• Montana State’s all-time leading passer (Travis Lulay) and rusher (Ryan Johnson) were at Folsom Field for MSU’s stunning win Saturday, as was arguably the school’s best-ever defensive player (Kane Ioane, a Bobcat assistant)
• After finishing only one game with more takeaways than giveaways last year, Montana State started 2006 by forcing the game’s only turnover, a crucial fourth-quarter fumbled kick return caused by Andre Fuller and recovered by Bryant Matthews

OFFENSE: QB Cory Carpenter, 6-2, 207, Jr, The Dalles, OR
In his first start since his 2002, when he was a senior at The Dalles High School in Oregon, Cory Carpenter threw for 229 yards on 23-for-31 passing in leading the Bobcats to a 19-10 upset Division I-A Colorado. After missing three of his first four passes, Carpenter hit his next six passes and finished his first college start 23-for-31 with one touchdown and no interceptions. Carpenter completed passes to six different receivers, leading MSU’s 58-yard third quarter touchdown drive that gave MSU a lead it would not relinquish, and his 229 passing yards is fourth-most for a Bobcat in his quarterback debut. Carpenter was 16-for-19 passing for 180 yards in the second half, when MSU came from a 10-6 intermission deficit to outscore the Buffs 13-0. OTHER NOTES: MSU’s receivers entered Saturday’s game without a single catch in an MSU uniform, but Bobcat receivers combined for 18 catches and 207 yards on Saturday (and Bobcat coach Mike Kramer failed to make good on his promise to stop the game and honor the inaugural catch by a receiver of the 2006 season with a commemorative photo)… Michael Jefferson made his Bobcat debut by catching 10 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown… Evin Groves rushed for 58 yards on Saturday… tight end Brandon Bostick, making his first career start, doubled his 2005 catch total by snagging two balls for 22 yards, including a crucial third-down catch
DEFENSE: CB Andre Fuller, 5-10, 171, Jr, Pompano Beach, FL
Andre Fuller led an effective Montana State defense Saturday, registering seven tackles (six solos) and causing Colorado to fumble two kickoff returns, one of which MSU recovered and converted into a game-clinching field goal. He also had two pass breakups and one third-down tackle that ended a Colorado drive. Fuller’s effort was part of a Bobcat defense that limited Colorado to 216 total yards, including 110 yards through the air on 8-for-22 passing. OTHER NOTES: Bobby Daly registered 10 tackles against Colorado, the sophomore linebacker’s third career double-digit tackle performance… MSU broke up five Buffalo passes, including two by Andre Fuller… senior captain Clive Lowe, a linebacker, had six tackles, one sack, a quarterback hurry, and a forced fumble… Colorado gained 42 yards on its first play from scrimmage, the longest opening play in CU history, but the Bobcats limited the Buffs to just 172 yards thereafter
SPECIAL TEAMS: K Jeff Hastings, 5-9, 180, Jr, Long Beach, CA
Jeff Hastings hit all four of his field goal tries on Saturday, scoring 13 points in Montana State’s 19-10 win over Division I-A Colorado. Hastings, who set MSU’s single-season field goal record with 16 last season, hit has career-long of 44 on Saturday. The senior from Long Beach, Calif., was 20-for-20 from inside 40 yards last year, and is now 22-for-22 as a Bobcat from that range. OTHER NOTES: After setting a school record with 16 field goals in 2005, Jeff Hastings begin the ’06 season by hitting all four of his field goal attempts at Colorado, including a career-long 44-yarder… Montana State held Colorado to -4 yards on its only punt returns, and to 17 yards per kickoff return on six tries… on the other hand, MSU averaged 13 yards on its five punt returns and 23 yards on its only kickoff return… the biggest play of the day probably came on Colorado’s kick return after Jeff Hastings’ field goal that made the score 16-10. Andre Fuller caused the fumble, Bryant Matthews recovered it, and after running nearly three minutes off the clock Hastings iced the game with a 41-yard field goal
