Bobcat Spikers Rally to Down Lumberjacks

After being out-hit in the opening game .485 to .259, Montana State (6-8, 2-3) got a kill from Wiebe, coupled with an NAU hitting error to take game two. In the third set, the Bobcats built a 25-20 advantage and won on a Kami Buettner kill. In the final stanza, MSU held an early 12-7 lead, before the Lumberjacks answered to stake a 25-19 margin.
The Bobcats closed to within 29-27 and held off two game points to tie the score at 29-all. MSU then had two opportunities to put the match away, but NAU matched the Bobcats. MSU faced two more game points at 32-31 and 33-32, before Kim Stonehouse won the match on a kill.
“The kids played with a lot of heart,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “They out-hit us, out-dug us, and out-blocked us, but we still found a way to win. That’s exactly what we’ve been looking for from the girls over the past few weeks.”
Also contributing to the Bobcat victory was Buettner, who chipped in six kills and 16 assists, while hitting .600 from the floor. Kandice Kelly paced MSU defensively with a team-high 21 digs.
“It’s great to get a conference road win,” Malauulu said. “I’m proud of our ‘never say die’ attitude. Hopefully, this confidence will spill over into next weekend.”
NAU was paced in the loss by Kim Babcock with 22 kills.
The Bobcats will host Eastern Washington and Portland State next week in Shroyer Gym.
