Bobcats Bounce Back with Road Win

Road sweet road.
In Montana State’s second game away from Bozeman this season, the Bobcats restored order and revived their season with an exhilarating 39-32 win over Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. Cory Carpenter threw for 300 yards and true freshman Aaron Mason rushed for 192 yards and a pair of touchdowns to spear the win.
“As the quarterback, you take the brunt when you lose,” said MSU coach Mike Kramer. “Mike Jefferson made those catches, the young pup (Mason) had a good day running the ball, the offensive line played well, but it starts with the quarterback. Cory (Carpenter) did a great job.”
While Kramer singled out several individual efforts, he lauded the team for its effort coming together on the road after a three-game losing streak. “We came back tonight and (the coaching staff) got the kids to represent,” said MSU coach Mike Kramer. “They represented themselves and they represented their families.”
Montana State jumped to an early lead on a 48-yard catch by Donell Wheaton, and after NAU evened the score the ‘Cats answered with a pair of second-quarter TDs to take a 22-7 lead. MSU led 22-14 at the intermission, and the team’s 350 yards in the first half was 50 more than its season average before entering the Skydome on Saturday.
MSU carved the Lumberjack defense early in the second half, scoring on a Jeff Hastings field goal on the first drive and on a 42-yard run by Mason on the second. NAU staged a furious rally, scoring 18 straight points to tie the game at 32, but with just under seven minutes to play Carpenter led MSU on a five-play, 80-yard drive which culminated in a spectacular catch in the back of the end zone by Brandon Bostick. “I saw him play basketball,” Kramer said of the once fearsome rebounder with a smile.
MSU’s win snapped a three-game losing streak, but Kramer said there’s nothing to the notion of his team’s road expertise contrasted to its home woes. “I don’t think it’s a matter of the venue,” he said. “It’s how we feel about ourselves, how we prepare, and how we play. I want us now to show our fans that this is who we are.”
