The MSU men’s team was paced in the race by true-freshman Nick Atwood, who finished eighth overall, covering the 8-kilometer course in 25:51. He was followed closely by Kurt Michels, 12th, 26:00, Matt Adams, 15th, 26:03, Devin McDowell, 19th, 26:24, Matt Beamer, 24th, 26:30, Graydon Curry, 29th, 27:00, Michael Kapus, 33rd, 27:23, and David Steinbacher, 43rd, 27:50.
“Our guys had a tremendous afternoon,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “We got solid efforts across the board. Nick continues to run very well, and it was nice to see Kurt Michels have a good race, especially after resting quite a bit over the past two weeks.
“We really saw the progression we were hoping for,” Kennedy added. “We’ll continue to develop in a consistent manner.”
The Bobcat men defeated Montana, Idaho State and Eastern Washington, while dropping its only dual to Washington State.
WSU’s Alex Grant won the men’s race in a time of 25:05.
As expected, the Montana State women’s contingent got strong performances out of its top three runners.
Senior captain Ashley Hadway led the Bobcats finishing fifth overall, covering the 6-kilometer event in 22:22. She was followed closely by Carrie Gottschalk, sixth, 22:24 and Elisabeth Driscoll, ninth, 22:33.
“I was really impressed by our top three kids and the way they competed,” Kennedy said. “They really made some strides from the MSU Invitational, which was two weeks ago.”
Rounding out MSU’s top seven were Kayla Larson, 33rd, 24:29; Marilee Woyth, 35th, 24:33, Leah Thompson, 36th, 24:34, and Elena Gibson, 43rd, 25:47.
“We need our Nos. 4-7 to continue to develop,” Kennedy said. “They certainly have the ability to improve tremendously by the time of the Big Sky Conference championships.”

Haley Paul of Washington State won the women’s individual title in 21:31.
The Bobcats will compete at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in two weeks at Indiana State.
