INDIVIDUAL NOTES/PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
OFFENSE: WR Michael Jefferson (6-2, 205, Sr)
Michael Jefferson caught four passes for 26 yards against Eastern Washington on Saturday. His 14-yard reception was MSU’s only touchdown.
OTHER OFFENSIVE NOTES: Cory Carpenter was 19-for-23 passing with an interception and a touchdown on Saturday, and his .681 completion percentage is best in the Big Sky for anyone with more than six throws… in MSU’s last two games, Isaiah Taito has 118 rushing yards on 28 carries… Aaron Mason’s 35-yard run on Saturday was MSU’s first rush for 20 yards or more in 2006
DEFENSE: LB Bryant Matthews (6-0, 205, Jr)
Making his first start as a Bobcat, Bryan Matthews registered nine tackles (four solos), including 2.5 for a loss. Matthews led a Bobcat defensive effort that limited EWU to 301 yards, including just 176 in the air.
OTHER DEFENSIVE NOTES: Will Claggett led the Bobcats in tackles last week with 13… MSU’s starting linebackers (Will Claggett, Bryant Matthews and Bobby Daly) combined for 11 or MSU’s 30 defensive tackles… Reyshawn Bobo’s, out of MSU’s revised 4-3 defensive alignment, was the first of the season by a Bobcat defensive end
SPECIAL TEAMS: P Tyler Bolton (5-10, 193, So)
Making his 2006 debut, and his first appearance as MSU’s punter, Bolton punted four times for 192 yards against Eastern Washington. He averaged 48.0 yards per punt, and didn’t allow an Eastern Washington return. Using MSU’s familiar roll-style punt, Bolton pinned the Eagles inside the 20 three times, once at the one-yard line. Eastern’s average starting field position after Bobcat punts was its own 16 yard line. Bolton’s 70-yard punt was tied for sixth-longest in school history.
OTHER SPECIAL TEAM NOTES: Saturday’s game featured MSU’s sixth-longest punt, a 70-yarder by Tyler Bolton in his first game of the season and his first start as MSU’s punter, and Eastern’s fourth-longest field goal, a 53-yarder by converted safety Brett Bergstrom… Jeff Hastings’ incredible run of kicking accuracy continued Saturday, as he converted his only field goal attempt (a 40-yarder) and his only PAT, to move to 6-for-6 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points this season… Hastings has converted seven straight field goals, dating to last season, a school record… he has hit 15 straight field goal attempts inside 40 yards… MSU has used three punters this season (Jack Rolovich, Ryan Force, and Tyler Bolton)
