“I’m so proud of the way our setters performed,” said MSU fourth-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “They put our hitters in a position to score, and our hitters responded.”
Montana State (5-6, 1-1) setters Sarah Allen and Kami Buettner combined for 44 assists and five kills. Buettner, who dished out 24 assists, also finished one kill shy of her career high of five winners.
“Both Kami and Sarah put in a lot of homework this week,” Malauulu said. “I’m happy with their performances. It’s exactly what we’ve been looking for from that position.”
Also in double-figure kills for MSU was Laura Viren with 11, while Raelene Purnell provided eight kills and a match-high .350 attack mark. Libero Kandice Kelly recorded a match-high 22 digs, and Viren, Purnell and Angela Wiebe combined for 12 blocks.
Montana State rallied from a 12-7 deficit in the opening game. MSU took its first lead at 21-20 on a Wiebe kill. The teams traded leads twice, before the Bobcats pulled away at 26-25, winning on a Purnell kill.
In the second stanza, Montana State built a 17-10 advantage on a Buettner kill, before Weber State (4-13, 0-3) closed to within 23-20. Viren and Stonehouse combined for four kills down the stretch, before a Patti Anderson and Viren block gave the Bobcats the win.
In the final set, Montana State used a 4-0 run to break away from a 21-all tie to take a 25-21 margin. WSU answered to tie the game at 28-all, before a Stonehouse kill, followed by an Anderson winner gave the Bobcats the match.
“We never panicked and we were very steady,” Malauulu said. “It was nice to see our kids have a good response after our disappointing loss in Missoula.”
Weber State was paced by Kolbie Murphey with 12 kills and six blocks.
Montana State will host Idaho State, Saturday night in Shroyer Gym.
