Montana State suffered its worst home loss in seven years and its first home shutout since 1985 on Saturday, losing a 45-0 decision to UC Davis.
Trailing just 7-0 with 2:11 to play in the first half, the Bobcat defense limited UC Davis to a field goal after a turnover deep in Aggie territory. On the next possession, however, Cory Carpenter threw an interception, and the Aggies scored with 26 seconds left in the half to begin an avalanche that didn’t end until early in the fourth quarter.
“It was a great effort by Cal Davis,” said Bobcat head coach Mike Kramer, who suffered the first shutout in his 15-year head coaching career. “Their quarterback played outstanding. He showed the mettle on third down that proved him to be a considerable quarterback.”
Aggies signal caller Jon Grant finished the day 23-for-38 for 324 yards, and threw five touchdown passes. Long before the 28-point second-half scoring spurt, though, he set the tone of the game by his ability to convert on third down. UC Davis was 12-for-18 on third down conversion attempts on the game, many of seven yards or longer.
“Their ability to keep our defense on the field wore us down in the third quarter,” Kramer said. The Aggies followed their late first half scoring spurt with a third-quarter explosion. UC Davis scored touchdowns on all three third quarter possessions, and held the ball for 10:27 of that period.
While the UC Davis offense was churning out 496 total yards, the Aggie defense was holding Montana State to just 194 total yards. Cory Carpenter and Jack Rolovich combined for a 17-for-35 passing day for 192 yards, and the ‘Cats threw a pair of interceptions. MSU rushed the ball 15 times for two yards.
“We were totally ineffective in the running game,” said Kramer, whose offense is now without three starters (tight end Elliott Barnhart, running back Evin Groves, and receiver Josh Lewis). “I’m most concerned that we’re burning down the house in the offensive front at critical moments.”
