Bobcat Harriers Open Season with 27th Annual MSU Invitational

The men’s five-mile event will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the women’s three-mile race at 9:40 a.m. Competing along with the Bobcats will be Montana, Weber State, Utah State, Utah (women), MSU-Billings, Great Falls, Concordia (Minn.), and Westminster.
The race will also serve as the annual ‘Cat-Griz dual. The Bobcat men’s squad has defeated UM in four of the last six races, while the Grizzlies have posted five-of-six victories on the women’s side.
“We’re excited to open our season,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “We have a lot of veteran talent and some outstanding newcomers. This will be a good opportunity for our kids to race against some of the best runners in the region.”
The Bobcat women boast three runners that captured all-conference kudos in either cross country or track and field. Leading they way will be senior Ashley Hadway, who redshirted last fall, after placing fourth at the Big Sky Championships in 2004. Elisabeth Driscoll, a two-time all-league performer in cross country, and Carrie Gottschalk, who took honors in the 5000-meters at the Big Sky outdoor meet, will also look to contribute.
Rounding out MSU’s squad will be Kyla Larson, Leah Thompson, Marilee Woyth and Elena Gibson.
“We’re excited about our front-runners,” Kennedy said. “They can compete with the best in the conference. In order for us to be successful, we’ll need those kids to give us solid performances, and our No. 4-7 runners to get within 30-seconds of them.”
Senior captain Kurt Michels will pace the Bobcat men’s team, following the departure of All-Big Sky performer Tony Bachmann. Michels, who transferred from Utah last fall, finished eighth at the Big Sky Championships.
“In our preseason sessions, Kurt has established himself as the leader of the team,” Kennedy said.
The rest of the MSU squad is short on experience, but possess plenty of talent.
Sophomore Devin McDowell finished strong last season to earn a varsity letter, while teammates Graydon Curry, Michael Kapus, Matt Beamer and Matt Adams will also look to place among MSU’s top five.
Freshmen Nick Atwood and David Steinbacher, a Bozeman High product, will also compete for the Bobcats.
“Our younger kids have made nice progress,” Kennedy said. “I think we can be pretty competitive.”
According to Kennedy, Weber State will be the favorites in both races. The Wildcats feature All-America performers Seth Pilkington and Lindsey Anderson.
