Montana State 24, Chadron State 35
A week after shocking the college football world with a win over Colorado of the Big 12, Montana State dropped a 35-24 decision to NCAA Division II Chadron State in MSU's home opener on Saturday.
Chadron's Danny Woodhead rushed for 215 yards on 33 carries and the Eagles benefited from five Bobcat turnovers, including a fumble returned 27 yards by Beau Wendling for a touchdown that gave Chadron State a 14-0 lead. Woodhead scampered 27 yards on Chadron State's first possession to give the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish. On MSU's second possession, Donnell Wheaton fumbled on a swing pass near the Chadron State sideline, and Wendling scooped the ball and scored. Trailing 14-0, the Bobcats marched to the Chadron State 14 yard-line. On a third-and-three the Eagles stuffed freshman running back Aaron Mason, playing for injured starter Evin Groves, for a loss of three, forcing a 35-yard field goal by Jeff Hastings.
A considerable amount of credit, Kramer said, goes to Woodhead, who dominated the game and allowed Chadron State to hold the ball for 11 minutes in the third quarter and 36 minutes of the game. "He's good," Kramer said of Woodhead. "He's really good. He reminds me of (Walter Payton Trophy candidate) James Noble of Cal Poly, and we haven't beaten Cal Poly since Robert E. Lee was marching north."
Kramer said an important chapter of the 2006 season will be written by the Bobcats during practice this week in preparation for Saturday's home game against UC Davis. "No matter how you write it, it's a slap in the face," he said. "Now we have to respond."
