Creighton knocked off Florida Atlantic to capture the HIC title with a perfect 3-0 mark.
Montana State (1-2) was paced in the loss by Kim Stonehouse and Raelene Purnell with 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Purnell, who was named to the HIC All-Tournament team, hit .360 from the field and added two service aces.
“We didn’t get our block established from the opening serve,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “Blocking is our bread and butter, and we just didn’t get the job done at the net.”
Also contributing for the Bobcats was Angela Wiebe with nine kills and two blocks and Kandice Kelly with a team-high 18 digs.
Nevada (2-1) had three players in double-figure kills. Aside from Ericson’s total, Karly Sipherd and Carly Sorensen tallied 13 and 12 kills, apiece. Tristin Johnson dished out 54 assists, while Allison Hernandez posted a match-high 22 digs.
“We had our chances in games two and four,” Malauulu said. “We’ll definitely be working on our ability to finish out a match and blocking, this week.”
Named to the all-tournament team were Raelene Purnell, Montana State, Korie Lebeda, Creighton, MVP, Abby Baumann, Creighton, Carolyn Decker, Creighton, Tristin Johnson, Nevada, Teal Ericson, Nevada, and Iana Andonova, Florida Atlantic.
Montana State will travel to the Kansas State Invitational next weekend.
