Bobcat Spikers Solid in Season Opener

It was the season-opener for both squads.
“It’s the first solid opener that we’ve had around here in a long time,” said MSU fourth-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “Everyone contributed to the win. I was especially pleased with our discipline.”
Montana State (1-0) opened the match with an early 5-1 lead following an Angela Wiebe kill. Florida Atlantic (0-1) rallied to take a 17-12 advantage; before the Bobcats answered with a 6-0 run to go ahead 18-17.
With the score knotted at 27-all, MSU received back-to-back kills by Wiebe and Raelene Purnell to push the margin to 29-27. The Bobcats won the game on an Owls attack error.
In the second stanza, the Owls cruised to an early 14-3 advantage, before the Bobcats rallied with a 14-4 run. Following a block by Stonehouse, MSU led 22-20. Montana State staved off two match points and won the game on another FAU hitting error.
“We dug ourselves a pretty good hole in both games,” Malauulu said. “However, our kids didn’t get rattled. They stayed steady and found a way to get back in to the game and get the win.”
In the final set, MSU found itself down 9-2 before coming back. The Bobcats went on an 18-5 run and held a 20-14 advantage following a Stonehouse block. A FAU hitting error gave Montana State the victory.
Also posting double-digit kills for MSU were Purnell and Wiebe with 11 and ten, respectively.
“I’m pleased with the job our middles did,” Malauulu said. “They did a nice job establishing themselves and getting available.”
Senior setter Kami Buettner dished out 33 assists, while Laura Viren posted 13 digs to guide the Bobcats. Also in double-figure digs were Kandice Kelly 11, and Patti Anderson and Buettner with ten, apiece.
Wiebe paced the Bobcats at the net with a match-high four blocks.
Iana Andonova led the Owls with 21 kills and 12 digs.
In the opening match of the Holiday Inn Classic, Creighton defeated Nevada 3-0.
MSU will face Creighton on Saturday at 10 a.m., and Nevada in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
