Outside Hitters Lead Bobcat White in Volleyball Scrimmage

“We’re definitely further along than I expected to be after this scrimmage,” said fourth-year head coach Miya Malauulu. “We did a lot of great things. Now, we’re in the position to fine-tune some things and start paying attention to details.”
Junior college transfer Sarah Allen set Bobcat White and dished out 36 assists, while adding 11 digs. Bobcat White out-dug their counterparts 69-57, as Kandice Kelly led all players with a match-high 22 digs.
Junior middle blocker Raelene Purnell also paced Bobcat White with nine kills and a match-high eight blocks.
“In particular, I thought Raelene and Laura (Viren) each had a good scrimmage,” Malauulu said. “Raelene set the tone at the net, and Laura played very solid defense, while getting double-digit kills.”
Bobcat Blue was led by Wendy Doutre, a freshman slated to redshirt, with 15 kills, while Viren chipped in 12. Viren also recorded 15 digs, and freshman libero Meghan Albiston added a team-high 16 saves. Kami Buettner dished out 31 assists for Bobcat Blue, and Angela Wiebe and Kyla Hendry each recorded a team-high seven blocks.
“I was pleased with the performances of our freshmen, and Kandice (Kelly) showed us that she is the glue that holds us together,” Malauulu said. “The two setters did a nice job with their choices, but need to work on tempo and location.”
Montana State opens its 2006 season hosting the 12th annual Holiday Inn Classic, Aug. 25-26. MSU will open against Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m. on Friday.
