Bobcat Spikers Right on Track

The scrimmage, slated for Saturday at 10 a.m. in Shroyer Gym, will closely simulate an actual match.
“We’re going to do everything like it’s game day,” Malauulu said. “I’m interested in seeing who will respond in a number of different situations.”
MSU is currently coming to the end of its second week of two-a-day practices. “Our kids are ahead of schedule,” Malauulu said. “We haven’t had to do a lot of stopping to make sure everyone is on the same page.”
The Bobcats return four starters, in addition to libero Kandice Kelly. Leading MSU is All-Big Sky Second-Team selection Kim Stonehouse. The senior outside hitter is one of the most dynamic athletes in the league.
Also returning to MSU’s starting rotation are Angela Wiebe, Laura Viren and Kami Buettner.
“The upperclassmen are doing a tremendous job being disciplined with our system,” Malauulu said. “They are setting the tone for our younger kids, and they’re responding.”
One area that Malauulu is paying a lot of attention is at the setting position.
“We have a nice battle going between Kami and transfer Sarah Allen,” Malauulu said. “Kami is really doing a nice job and Sarah is pushing her, which for us is exactly what we want.”
Montana State will open its season hosting the 12th Annual Holiday Inn Classic, Aug. 25-26, which will feature Nevada, Creighton and Florida Atlantic.
“We still have a ways to go before our first match, but I’m happy with our progress,” Malauulu said. “Saturday’s scrimmage will give us a good point of reference as we build towards the season-opener.”
