Bobcats Move into Double-Day Phase

For Bobcat football coach Mike Kramer, Monday begins the phase of fall camp he likens to a decisive hand of poker.
"All in," he says with a smile, referring to the fact that MSU's offensive and defensive schemes are completely implemented. "Everything from now on is refinement. We're smoothing into it. (Sunday) felt like practice 20, because our guys are buying into the fact that the first 15 practices for this team were in the spring."
Kramer said the team's first day in full pads didn't necessarily reflect the intensity he'd hoped for, but that his team showed other positive attributes. "We were efficient and effective, businesslike and workmanlike."
Kramer said that as much as the two-a-day practices his team faces on Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week will challenge his team physically, the mental element may be even more important. "Part of (having the offensive and defensive schemes in during the first three practices) is to test how well guys adjust. We're back to the concept of measuring each player's ability to digest the daily information that is critical to each player's ability to get on the field."
Kramer said the kicking game marked among the most important elements installed over the weekend. "It looks like Josh Lewis will battle Kory Austin to be our punt returner and Mike Jefferson to be our kick returner. Tyler Bolton showed some signs as a conventional punter today, because we always want the flexibility to (roll punt and conventional punt)."
Kramer said the next step in camp is for younger players to take steps forward. "We saw a lot of mistakes from the twos (on Sunday)," he said. "The backups showed why they are backups. But that's great for them, because they'll be able to see it on film and learn and get better.
"And that's what camp is all about."

Kramer indicated that backup cornerback Chris Davis, a transfer from New Mexico State two years ago, retired on Saturday. "He just couldn't get himself healthy," Kramer said. Kramer said supplementing his team's secondary depth after the loss of Davis and fellow senior Eddie Smith, who opted to enter into business rather than return for his final season of eligibility, becomes a priority.

The Bobcats practice in full pads in the morning on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with just shoulder pads and helmets in the afternoon. "Full pads in the morning, light and fast in the afternoon," he said. "I want to see energy. I want to see us better display what is being taught, because they won't see anything new from now on."
