Montana State added versatility and experience to its backcourt Friday, signing Mecklen Davis of Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
The 6-2 Atascadero, Calif., native averaged 17.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists a game last year. He averaged 5.8 rebounds and 5.3 assists in conference play. Davis scored 23 points a game and grabbed 6.6 boards with two assists as a freshman in 2005. The two-time all-conference choice also served as team captain in both his seasons at Cuesta.
"Mecklen does a little bit of everything," said MSU coach Brad Huse. "He's not the type of guard where you'd say he does one thing better than the other. He just has a knack for scoring and we certainly lose some scoring due to graduation. I like that he is a physical and determined player. He is also versatile, as he was forced to play a lot of point this year. We picked up a good all-around player here."
Davis took an interesting path to the Bobcat program. The two-time All-CIF First Team choice at Atascadero High played as a 6-2 power forward during his last two prep seasons, helping his school to a 27-3 mark as a senior. He averaged 20 points and six rebounds a game and became only the second player to earn San Luis Obispo County Player of the Year honors twice.
"Mecklen is a guy that's going to do everything," said Cuesta head coach Rusty Blair, "and do everything well. He's going to score the ball, get to the free throw line, pass the ball. He's an assist guy, and he was one of the state leaders in steals. (MSU is) getting a well-rounded guy that can score. He led the conference in three-point shooting his freshman year, and was second in the state in free throw attempts. He's going to slash to the basket and shoot well from the free throw line. He's going to set his teammates up. There's nothing negative you can say about Mecklen. He ended up as (Cuesta's) all-time scoring average leader with 20.1 points a game during his career. In fact, he ended up in the top two or three in all our career categories. He averaged almost six rebounds a game for his career. He's a guy that's going to make an impact right away in the Big Sky Conference."
Davis is MSU's fifth signee of the spring recruiting period, and Huse thinks MSU's increased depth at guard will be healthy. "This is has been a productive recruiting period, and Mecklen really is an important piece of the puzzle," MSU's first-year head coach said.
