Montana State tennis standout Marek Gebicki has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large First-Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The men’s at-large program for Academic All-America includes the sports of fencing, golf, hockey, rifle, skiing, swimming, gymnastics, tennis and wrestling from NCAA Division I institutions.
Gebicki, a senior from Lodz, Poland, registered a 3.99 grade-point average in industrial engineering and paced the Bobcats to three consecutive Big Sky Conference titles and three straight NCAA Tennis Championship appearances.
A four-time all-Big Sky Conference first-team selection as well as a four-time all-league academic honoree, Gebicki posted a 17-14 overall record in singles action, including 12 wins at the No. 2 position this spring. In addition, he combined with Kyle McDonald at No. 1 doubles, where the tandem recorded a 17-8 mark.
Gebicki is a three-time District VII At-Large Academic award winner and was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large Second-Team as a junior.
“What Marek has accomplished both on and off the court in the past four years is truly phenomenal,” said MSU men’s coach Mike Phillips. “He worked just as hard off the court as he did in practice and matches. He is what this program is all about- and that is to accomplish on the court, but even more importantly, in the classroom. Marek is an outstanding kid and a great representative of Montana State University.”
The Academic All-America program honors 816 male and female student-athletes that have succeeded at the highest level. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, and have reached sophomore academic standing at their current institution.
Along with Gebicki, also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large First-Team were David Backes, hockey, Minnesota State-Mankato; Travis Beckerle, swimming, Minnesota; Kurt Cady, swimming, Auburn; Alejandro Canizares, golf, Arizona State; Roberto Castro, golf, Georgia Tech; Nikola Djordjevic, tennis, Hofstra; Tommy Garrison, tennis, Oklahoma; Matt Miklius, swimming, Steven Piantadosi, fencing, North Carolina, Jose-Carlos Pinto, tennis, Mississippi State; Zack Robinson, golf, Oklahoma State; Jason Rogers, fencing, Ohio State; Joseph Sykora, golf, Alabama; Alex Tirapelle, wrestling, Illinois; and Ben Wildman-Tobriner, swimming, Stanford.
